Near the end if the story she says, “no person touches this paper but me,-not alive!” (118) Therefore the yellow wallpaper plays a very large part in the main characters insanity.
Loneliness also is a theme in this story although it is not as evident. The reader can tell that the main character does not only suffer from insanity but also from depression, perhaps because of her loneliness. She often finds herself crying and she says “I cry at nothing, and cry most of the time.”(111) She tries tot ell her husband how she is feeling but she is unable, she discovers “I was crying before I had finished.”(11) The reader can see how this woman is very upset and it is not only due to her illness. Although the main character makes many references and comments about her husband she does not find him very reassuring. He talks to her like a child, this is shown when he says “What is it little girl?” (11), and “Bless her little heart!” (11) This makes the main character feel insignificant and once again alone. She states, “I am alone a good deal just now.” (111)
The theme of being trapped intertwines with both of the previous themes. The main character feels extremely trapped. Although she never admits it, this theme is greatly implied throughout the story. The main character first of all feels trapped by her husband. This is obvious when she states “I am absolutely forbidden to ‘work’ until I am well again.”(106) Even more-so, the main character feels trapped by her sickness. As her sickness grows and she becomes more involved with the yellow wallpaper, she begins to see a woman behind the wallpaper, she states, “it becomes bars!…and the woman behind them is as plain as can be.”(114) This symbolizes the main character trapped behind her sickness and unable to escape. She is seeing herself in the wallpaper without even realizing it. It is uplifting though that at the end the main character feels that she is free from her sickness and free from all of the bad things she saw in the wallpaper. She finally comes to see that she was in fact the woman who she saw in the wallpaper. All throughout the story the word “creep” is used. Referring to the smell of the wallpaper and how “it creeps all over the house.”(115), also referring to the woman in the wallpaper. The main character states “It is the same woman, I know, for she is always creeping and most women do not creep by daylight.”(116) At the end of the story these statements all come together when the main character has ripped down all of the yellow wallpaper and her husband faints across the path she has made. My friend liked him a lot, she sent him a lot of hints, and she tried so hard to get him. And finally one day that guy came up to her and asked her out. They have only gone out for a month, and the guy told her that he wanted to have sex with her. My friend slept with him; she had slept with him because she loved him, and she thought that he loved her. She believed she was ready to have sex because she loved him. After that day, the guy stopped calling her and ignored her calls. She later saw him, and he was holding hands with another girl. She later found out that the only reason he got with her was because he broke up with his ex-girlfriend, and he was “sexually frustrated” so he took advantage of my friend. My friend became very angry, she was so devastated; she had sex with him because she loved him and thought that he loved her, but it was all a lie. There are a lot of men that would do anything to get a woman in bed, and to become sexually pleasured. Like what the author said, most males are much more interested in sex than love. The fact is the female will love before sex, and the male love after sex.
However, I believe the author is being to harsh on the fact that it will be hard for a woman to find a man, because men only want sex. There are many men searching for their true love as well, and they want to meet the right person to whom they can devote themselves too. I knew a guy that had a crush on a girl for a long time, he would always write love letters to her and he would always send her gifts. Finally, he got the guts to ask her out. The girl said yes and they started going out, he began to really love her, he was so happy that he was with her. His girlfriend wanted to take everything slowly; she told him that she wanted to have sex after she gets married. He respected the fact that she wanted to take things slow. His girlfriend was so happy that he respected her feelings that she began to love him more. And now I hear that they have kids and are having a great marriage. Just like my friend, there are a lot of men who respect a woman’s feelings, and they know that they should take a relationship slowly. When the author quotes, “he will be more sexually demanding, less devoted to the children, more fickle, more absorbed in outside affairs, less warm and romantic, less sociable, and more interested in some silly sporting events than you. Tough!” He’s statement was being to judgmental, there are a lot of men who love children, who can be warm and romantic, and more sociable. The author is too broad when he asks about how men only want sex, and that women should just take it that way. Men will and can be sweet and caring to a person they truly love.
In conclusion, I agree with the author’s view about how men only want to be sexually pleasured, and that they are more interested in sex than love. My friend became very angry, she was so devastated; she had sex with him because she loved him and thought that he loved her, but it was all a lie. There are six fundamental patterns of co-cultural differences. These include different communication styles, different attitudes toward conflict, different approaches to completing tasks, different decision-making styles, different attitudes toward disclosure, and different approaches to knowing. Because America is the most diverse nation in the world, it is important to understand the different communication styles within the co-cultures in order to accept and respect what makes each of us unique.
The need to communicate is universal. Most misunderstandings among people result from different co-cultural experiences. Most of us desire to communicate effectively, but do not have a keen appreciation of the barriers to be faced. Because of these barriers, there is ample opportunity for something to go wrong in any communication. Effective communication is difficult under the best of conditions. Four specific problems related to language difficulties that typically arise in co-cultural communication include semantics, word connotations, tonal differences, and different perceptions.
Webster defines semantics as “the meaning or relationship of meanings of a sign or set of signs; connotative meaning; the language used (as in advertising or political propaganda) to achieve a desired effect on an audience especially through the use of words with novel or dual meanings.” Simply put, almost every commonly used word has more than one meaning. Also, words have regional meanings or derive new meanings as a result of the development of new industries or fields. The meaning conveyed by the senders words depends upon the experience and attitude of the receiver. Therefore, one way to penetrate the semantic communication barrier is for the sender to strive to speak or write in terms of the receivers experience and attitude.
Combined with semantics, word connotation is a common communication barrier. Word connotation is a word’s association with social attitude, evaluation, emotional affect, etc. Words often have essentially the same denotation, but different connotations. The dictionary definition is known as a denotation. The attached meaning a receiver might associate with a word is known as a connotation. Finally, Sears has stepped out with its new flagship co-cultural store in Chicago. The 50,000 square-foot store is in the old State Street shopping district. Sometimes the most difficult concept to understand and accept is that, everyone is equal to everyone else… yet, each of us is different.
What makes us different? How do we negotiate our similarities and differences? It must be recognized and understood that all people belong to a particular group’. Because of the uniqueness of the group, one is often proud to wear its label and belong. However, a person does not succeed-or-fail-merely because of belong that particular group. As long as we respect personal differences as being important and are truly responsive to the fact that being different is okay, we become part of the solution.
People come in all sizes and colors, speak many languages, eat different foods, wear different clothes, are smart in some things… and not so smart in others. But the same world is home to all of us.
Diversity isnt just a concept; it should be a way of life. It is a misnomer to assume that our government can legislate our perceptions. It may be illegal to discriminate, but only if one is caught. Prejudice cannot be banished by laws, or controlled with fear. No one is born intolerant it is learned and practiced. The only way to unravel the bundle of fear, or misconceptions, we have of each other is to talk. The thought process or conceptions about each group must be broken down and re-evaluated. None of us have a monopoly on how to live correctly. Instead, we need to be open-minded to the differences in each of us. It may be the road-less-traveled, but it is that road that we must all travel. For it is the diversity that makes us all equal.

Modesty, submission, and conformity are but some of the celebrated traits of the herd morality, and man’s long subjection to this system has weakened him, and like a long-time captive animal, he carries with him a broken spirit. He wants to replace this herd with a warrior culture, that which celebrates noble suffering and violence. Suffering educates the spirit and strengthens the soul- fasting and the deprivation of the body’s physical desires elevates man from his base self, but only in war can one see the best and the worst of man. Life is a struggle, and in war there can be noble self-sacrifice- one either succeeds and is bathed in glory or is remembered in failure. While it can be argued that war can be noble, and that it does bring out the best in men; it gives one a reason to live- the nation. Before the concept of the nation can be discussed, the realities of war must be made clear. War is not just suffering, it is brutality, whole cities are destroyed, and innocent non-combatants, women and children are massacred. If one knew the reality of war one would not, in the words of one Wilfred Owen,
“…tell with such high zest/ To children ardent for some desperate glory,/ The old Lie Dulce et decorum est/ Pro patria mori” (Owen, 11)
The nature of war has not changed since the First World War, it did not change when Fascist countries took to the battlefield, and still has not changed today. In actuality of modern times, there is less suffering on the part of the so-called noble combatants, and more damage to innocents; with missiles, bombs and other technologically advanced weapons doing the damage from a safe distance. True, there may be value in ‘making oneself suffer’ (Nietzsche, p15), but one cannot help but wonder how it can be considered noble to suffer and die if one was not even fighting to begin with.
Unity is an important concept in fascist thought. Unity presupposes the concept of ‘us’ and ‘them,’ but Nietzsche takes this a step further, bordering on racism, he says ‘society should not exist for the sake of society but only as a foundation and scaffolding upon which a select species of being is able to raise itself to its higher task’ (Nietzsche, p1). The noble species, is the select species, and the noble man knows ‘himself to be the determiner of values, he does not need to be approved of’ (Nietzsche, p15). This has a tinge of bigotry, and is clearly manifested in the reign of one of the most recognizable fascist leaders- Adolf Hitler. His assertion of the Aryan race as the most pure and the Jews as ‘culture destroyers’ was brutally enforced, with the massacre of millions of Jewish men women and children. While unity can make a people stronger, it comes with definite negative side effects, that when combined with the celebration of suffering and violence produces a deadly cocktail of death and destruction.
Fascist thought should not be denied its worth, it does give man a better reason to live- for the nation, rather than for the petty pursuits of consumer life; it does give the individual more respect than is accorded by the capitalist system, it brings back spirituality and with it a certain ethics; but in manifesting fascist thought, the Germans committed genocide, and were guilty of war crimes. The fascist quest for the noble is highly commendable, it does rescue man from the doldrums of petty consumerism and gives value to life- a re-enchantment definitely; but along with the nobility comes the inevitable dose of bigotry. With vocabulary such as ‘the noble caste,’’ a select species,’ and ‘exploitation…as a reality it is the primordial fact of all history,’ one just needs to add this bigotry to the celebration of violence and suffering to see its disastrous effects not only on a particular race, but on the world. What cannot be denied is that the soul language of the fascists does bring us back to the machiavellian problem, which is precisely the side-effect of fascist nobility- the exploitation of man and his ‘spirituality’ for glory of the nation (read political power). The Fight Club captures fascist behaviour rather well true, in fascism, ‘you are not the contents of your wallet,’ but you love death more than they love life- you are a danger to the world because you think you are right, you think you are the best, and you think you may act as you wish, or as ‘the heart dictates, and in any case beyond good and evil.’ (Nietzsche, p16)

In its effort to curb the Machiavellian problem, Liberal thought made the modern man morally weaker, a hypocrite and a slave to desire. Indeed this disenchantment of the human race comes with a shift away from the spiritual and an alignment with the desires of the body, and the worldly. The modern day consumer-driven society is geared towards making life easier, more pleasant- and more base. The liberal system is characterized by its moral values, which aim to drive men by fear fear of conflict, fear of violent death- the liberal man is driven by passions and ruled by fear. Nietzsche argues that this weak liberal man is disenchanted and reintroduces the language of the soul- along with which comes that which is spiritual and noble, which he believes will re-enchant our degenerating race. Fascist thought does, to a large extent re-enchant man, restoring respect, and re-injecting value in the individual. However, its noble nature spills over into elitism with a hint of racism and more than just a pinch of violence. While fascist thought does inspire man to a level seemingly higher level than that of today, the values that it holds at its core, reeks of personal prejudice and condemns it to just a passing phase in the history of man. In this essay I will discuss the key values in fascist thought, how it inspires; and how these very values cause the very mention of fascism to be tinged with cruelty, murder, suffering and disaster.
Nietzsche puts forward that modern day morality is that of ‘herd instinct’ (Nietzsche, p10). The modern man has had his instinct to lead, to explore new ground cut off, by this ‘formal conscience’ (Nietzsche, p10), which commands man and tells him what he should or should not do. Modesty, submission, and conformity are but some of the celebrated traits of the herd morality, and man’s long subjection to this system has weakened him, and like a long-time captive animal, he carries with him a broken spirit. He has become but a follower of orders, afraid to step out into uncharted waters. This fear is like a cloud that hangs over the human race, stunting the spiritual growth of man, preventing progress
“The strange narrowness of human evolution, its hesitations, its delays, its frequent retrogressions and rotations, are due to the fact that the herd instinct of obedience has been inherited best and at the expense of the art of commanding.” (Nietzsche, p10)
The qualities that are glorified in the herd morality lead the herd man down the path of the tame, the peaceable, and those that pity; qualities which make him fear- fear change, fear pain, fear violent suffering. Herd morality is dedicated to the satisfaction of bodily desires, with the degradation of man’s supreme faculty serving all his other lowly ones. The modern man is ‘dissatisfied with himself that is certain’ (Nietzsche, p151).
Nietzsche mocks this fear of suffering, claiming that it is suffering, ‘great suffering … alone which has created every elevation of mankind hitherto’ (Nietzsche, p155). He wants to replace this herd with a warrior culture, that which celebrates noble suffering and violence. Suffering educates the spirit and strengthens the soul- fasting and the deprivation of the body’s physical desires elevates man from his base self, but only in war can one see the best and the worst of man. Life is a struggle, and in war there can be noble self-sacrifice- one either succeeds and is bathed in glory or is remembered in failure. While it can be argued that war can be noble, and that it does bring out the best in men; it gives one a reason to live- the nation. Before the concept of the nation can be discussed, the realities of war must be made clear. War is not just suffering, it is brutality, whole cities are destroyed, and innocent non-combatants, women and children are massacred. If one knew the reality of war one would not, in the words of one Wilfred Owen,
“…tell with such high zest/ To children ardent for some desperate glory,/ The old Lie Dulce et decorum est/ Pro patria mori” (Owen, 11)
The nature of war has not changed since the First World War, it did not change when Fascist countries took to the battlefield, and still has not changed today. In actuality of modern times, there is less suffering on the part of the so-called noble combatants, and more damage to innocents; with missiles, bombs and other technologically advanced weapons doing the damage from a safe distance. True, there may be value in ‘making oneself suffer’ (Nietzsche, p15), but one cannot help but wonder how it can be considered noble to suffer and die if one was not even fighting to begin with.
Unity is an important concept in fascist thought. Unity presupposes the concept of ‘us’ and ‘them,’ but Nietzsche takes this a step further, bordering on racism, he says ‘society should not exist for the sake of society but only as a foundation and scaffolding upon which a select species of being is able to raise itself to its higher task’ (Nietzsche, p1). The noble species, is the select species, and the noble man knows ‘himself to be the determiner of values, he does not need to be approved of’ (Nietzsche, p15). This has a tinge of bigotry, and is clearly manifested in the reign of one of the most recognizable fascist leaders- Adolf Hitler. His assertion of the Aryan race as the most pure and the Jews as ‘culture destroyers’ was brutally enforced, with the massacre of millions of Jewish men women and children. While unity can make a people stronger, it comes with definite negative side effects, that when combined with the celebration of suffering and violence produces a deadly cocktail of death and destruction.
Fascist thought should not be denied its worth, it does give man a better reason to live- for the nation, rather than for the petty pursuits of consumer life; it does give the individual more respect than is accorded by the capitalist system, it brings back spirituality and with it a certain ethics; but in manifesting fascist thought, the Germans committed genocide, and were guilty of war crimes. The fascist quest for the noble is highly commendable, it does rescue man from the doldrums of petty consumerism and gives value to life- a re-enchantment definitely; but along with the nobility comes the inevitable dose of bigotry. With vocabulary such as ‘the noble caste,’’ a select species,’ and ‘exploitation…as a reality it is the primordial fact of all history,’ one just needs to add this bigotry to the celebration of violence and suffering to see its disastrous effects not only on a particular race, but on the world. What cannot be denied is that the soul language of the fascists does bring us back to the machiavellian problem, which is precisely the side-effect of fascist nobility- the exploitation of man and his ‘spirituality’ for glory of the nation (read political power). The Fight Club captures fascist behaviour rather well true, in fascism, ‘you are not the contents of your wallet,’ but you love death more than they love life- you are a danger to the world because you think you are right, you think you are the best, and you think you may act as you wish, or as ‘the heart dictates, and in any case beyond good and evil.’ (Nietzsche, p16)
