Although the main character makes many references and comments about her husband she does not find him very reassuring. He talks to her like a child, this is shown when he says “What is it little girl?” (11), and “Bless her little heart!” (11) This makes the main character feel insignificant and once again alone. She states, “I am alone a good deal just now.” (111)




The theme of being trapped intertwines with both of the previous themes. The main character feels extremely trapped. Although she never admits it, this theme is greatly implied throughout the story. The main character first of all feels trapped by her husband. This is obvious when she states “I am absolutely forbidden to ‘work’ until I am well again.”(106) Even more-so, the main character feels trapped by her sickness. As her sickness grows and she becomes more involved with the yellow wallpaper, she begins to see a woman behind the wallpaper, she states, “it becomes bars!…and the woman behind them is as plain as can be.”(114) This symbolizes the main character trapped behind her sickness and unable to escape. She is seeing herself in the wallpaper without even realizing it. She also makes a comment stating, “she is all the time trying to climb through, but nobody could climb through that pattern-it strangles so;”(116) This shows the main characters desperateness to be free but her husband, the wallpaper and her sickness wont let her.

The narrator in this story is first person. This is effective because it allows the reader to see into the mind of the main character and realize how truly sick she is. The main literary device in this story is personification. The wallpaper seems to look at and talk to the main character from her perceptions. This is evident as the main character describes what she sees in the wallpaper here, “two bulbous eyes stare at you.”(10) Also as her sickness deepens she feels that the wallpaper “slaps (her) in the face.”(114)

The tone and mood in this story is very disturbing. As the story progresses so does the main characters sickness. The reader is sucked into the mind of this woman and therefore begins to realize her pain and insanity. This story almost gives the reader a sick feeling as they notice the incomprehensible things that the main character goes through and sees. The reader becomes wrapped in the readers twisted thoughts and almost becomes frightened. It is a dark and disturbing atmosphere.

The ending of this story is rather disturbing but yet uplifting at the same time. It is disturbing that the main character locks herself in her room and destroys the wallpaper that fascinated her for so long, and when John finally breaks in he faints and it is not totally clear why. It is uplifting though that at the end the main character feels that she is free from her sickness and free from all of the bad things she saw in the wallpaper. She finally comes to see that she was in fact the woman who she saw in the wallpaper. All throughout the story the word “creep” is used. Referring to the smell of the wallpaper and how “it creeps all over the house.”(115), also referring to the woman in the wallpaper. The main character states “It is the same woman, I know, for she is always creeping and most women do not creep by daylight.”(116) At the end of the story these statements all come together when the main character has ripped down all of the yellow wallpaper and her husband faints across the path she has made. She states “I had to creep over him every time!”(11) and “I kept on creeping just the same.”(11) This shows the reader that the main character saw herself trapped in the wallpaper and once she rips it down she states “ I’ve got out at last.”(11) The main character feels free and cured. In the Marconi case we can follow all the stages of preparation, actual placing managers at the company and further issues in foreign country. Even not trying to evaluate whether the entire process was conducted properly, just simply looking closer at all the matters � one can learn from their Mexican experience.

Perhaps trying to place ourselves in the Marconi’s shoes we could try to find a few better solutions or work out how to avoid certain failures.

In the first place I really liked the idea of sending managers to foreign countries to work for a company where Marconi held a minority interest. They could learn how does the firm work, only through observation they could learn how to exist in a new environment and gain the experience in foreign country. It shouldn’t have been a problem especially in US where in the south there are plenty of people like that. Such young Mexicans or Latin American graduates would speak English as well as Spanish, and they could be transferred to headquarters in Canada where they could learn company’s core business. As there is no big differencies in life or work conditions between Canada and US there shouldn’t be problem with such transfers.

Another thing that should be considered and perhaps changed was the vision the managers were provided with higher earnings, package benefits, additional perks, help, services, finance, housing, schools. All that was shown as an ideal, and already prepared. The managers and their families were taken to Mexico for kind of a trip � they were staying in hotels with English speaking staff, they were visiting places with an English speaking guide, who took care of them. They didn’t probably have to use public transport or even pay bills or order meals by themselves. They couldn’t really see what does the life really look like.

On site support this time wasn’t given, as it was in the past. It would be the most efficient preparation and lesson about another country if the future newcomers were contacted with native Mexicans - managers from Lerida Co.

They could ask questions, and all their queries should be answered. Where to work? Would be also a good idea. Even helping them to contact the families of Lerida’s managers to ask all those questions.

Instead of this kind of useful information and advices they were given just one day seminar which didn’t help at all and which was regarded by majority as a lost of time. If the company wanted to give the seminars there should be not one meeting but one every week. To give the managers the opportunity to ask questions. Not once but several times. Every day more and more queries arose and they would be able given the answer that couldn’t be found in the Internet or during the meeting in the Embassy.

Another huge problem seemed to be the language.

One of the employees claimed that the best time to start learning language was when they said, “yes” for going abroad. Learning Spanish was just an option while it should be an obligatory activity. Afterwards, when they had to learn the language in a very short time and in quote a stressful way they weren’t able to absorb as much.

This lack caused further problems; the managers couldn’t communicate with the employees that spoke only Spanish. They could never be sure whether the messages get through properly and if he was understood properly.

Frustration grew even higher when the key subordinate spoke only Spanish and the manager had to use an interpreter to achieve what was needed.

It could be good for the beginning, but afterwards even the expectations of the employees changed. What was understandable at the very beginning, later started to make the Mexicans impatient. No one can wonder that they expected their bosses to speak Spanish after a year and communicate with them in a normal way. Seeing no change they become reserved. Which made the situation even worse.

Managers themselves also noticed that they lost something that they found really substantial when working in Canada � ability to communicate with people. Here the lack of that caused frustration; not only in terms of company but also in the everyday life.

What could be done?

The process of choosing candidates could be changed � only the people fluent in Spanish language would be appointed. Other possible solution was to start the intensive courses as soon as the co. knew that such skills would be needed. It would be also helpful for the spouses if they were give the possibility to attend additional Spanish courses.

Not knowing the language they couldn’t build a relationship with the Mexicans, anywhere outside the company. No matter where they lived � in safe district, or in the city suburbs, they always felt like the aliens, minority that couldn’t adapt to new culture and place. They felt separated and isolated. To deal with that co. could organise some meetings with other companies, with city officials, authorities. However still the main problem was the language barrier, culture and tradition constraints � that could be solved before they left Canada � during the seminars, the Mexican lecturers could also mention the culture differences, typical behaviour, give some guidelines of how to deal with your neighbours and how to make them your friends.

Not only language seemed to be the problems for the Canadians, but also the everyday life. Mexico with its pollution and crime problems is not an easy place to life in. Usually they didn’t know what to expect and how to prepare. They got quite high expectations which, when confronted with the reality brought only disappointment. That also could be handled - during the seminars, or short trips to Mexico. It could be wise to show the managers ant their families not only the bright side but also what the Mexican reality is like � armed guards, different security issues, how to deal with something that is more or less normal in that country. The managers seemed not to know anything about social problems in Mexico. Not knowing that they were mostly shocked right from the time of their arrival when made to face the everyday life. The managers admitted that they like to work with challenges, with a feeling that quite a lot depends on them and their decisions. As they said this feeling was worth even more than any higher salaries. Providing them with more and more autonomy could be than the best incentive to keep them within the company, and make them even more involved.

The company could avoid language and culture shocks.

The managers from Mexico could be given a proper training in Canada. They could learn how the company works, what are the goals, what does the company expects from them, what they should try to implement in Mexico. They would know the reality and they would avoid all the issues connected with the adoption to the new environment.

Because of that Ben and his father havent spoken for months and maybe even years. Also because Ben told all the information to the terrorists he could no longer live with himself so he committed suicide. There was no real description of Ben because the story was told from his point of view. Mark Mark is bens father who feels guilty for forcing Ben to deliver a message to the terrorists and as a result Ben kills him self. At the end Ben and his father has a very deep conversation but of course it is in Marks imagination. Mark is a General for a top-secret military force. He is part of a group know as Fort Delta. He has a very secret life that he can not share with his family. b) Other characters Antibee Antibee is a very strong and buff man. He is the watchful eye for the group. He is very skillful at his work. Later he gets shot be one of the snipers in the woods. Stroll Stroll is the best driver in the country. He is African American and he is very quiet rarely speaks but when he dose it is very important. Most of the tome he uses gestures instead of words. Sedeete Sedeete is the leader of the Freedom Fighters. He is even greater than Artkin. Later he is captured and that was the downfall of the operation. Raymond Raymond is a little boy who is on the bus. He is the only child who truly knows what is going on because he is awake while all the other kids are asleep. And he also refuses to eat any of the drugged candy and as a result he his killed by Artkin. Setting In my story there are two settings one is in a dormitory of castle high and the other is the bridge where the hijackers take the bus. Castle High is the high school where the kids of people that are involved with Fort Delta go. It is a very heavily secured area. That is also the school that Ben’s father attended. Ben room is one of the biggest in the school because the fast that Ben’s dad is one of the Generals. My other setting is the bridge. The bridge is the place where the hijackers take the bus full of children. The bridge is fairly big. It is about 00 yards, or as Miro describes it, American football fields. The bridge has railroad tracks so there are gaps in between the bridge’s floor. There is also the bus which has taped up windows to unable the soldiers to see any one’s face. Plot The story starts off with Ben franticly typing on his type writer. He frequently stops and looks out the window waiting for his dad because this would be the first time they had seen each other or even spoken to each other since the “bridge”. While Ben is waiting the story moves into the terrorists point of view. The terrorists are standing in the corner waiting for the last child to be picked up by the bus. When the last child is picked up they will hijack the bus and take it to an abandoned bridge. But as they stop the bus they notice that the bus driver is not the usually man who hates kids. Instead it is the mans niece. Instantly their plan is disrupted but they decide to treat the girl the same way as they would to her uncle. Meanwhile Ben is still waiting for his father who has yet to show up. Ben promises him self that he won’t do anything stupid until he discusses it with his father. While Ben waits for his dad he is still frantically typing his journal and thoughts of the whole situation. Now the terrorist have hijacked the bus and gave the driver directions as to were she should go. The girl follows the orders as given but tries to find some way to escape. When they reached the bridge Artkin, the leader of the group, instructs Miro, A teen apart of the group, to give the kids drugged candy they had prepared before hand. Miro does as instructed by the leader and a while later the kids all fall asleep. Miro was suppose to kill the bus driver as soon as they reached the bridge but since the bus driver wasn’t the regular man who hated the kids Artkin told him to hold off. The reason her did that is because he thought the girl would be useful on tending the kids. Also she would make a good hostage. Miro was instructed to get close to the girl and gain her trust. As Miro talked to her he discovered that the girls name was Kate. Kate also had a few secrets of her own. She had a very weak bladder and she also had a spare key to the bus ignition so that once Miro took his periodic breaks and stood outside the bus she would try to drive the bus off the bridge and by doing so save both her and the children. While all of this was going on the police and the soldiers started to move into that are and the woods around the bridge. The woods were swamped with some of the best snipers fort delta had. And as soon as the Generals arrived they made their demands. There demands were “Number one, They are demanding the release of fifteen so-called political prisoners serving various sentences in this country. Two, they are asking for ten million dollars in cash. Three, they’re demanding the dismantling of what is know to some people as Inner Delta.” By dismantling they mean reviling the name of all the agents involved to the public. The people are given 4 hours to meet their demands are they will kill all the children. Also they said that for every crew member that is killed they will kill a child. Meanwhile Ben’s father arrives only to find an empty room with some typed sheets of paper left next to the typewriter. Mark (Ben’s father) immediately knows where Ben went and he prepares himself for any tragic news that will be delivered to him. While waiting for Ben to arrive he sits down n and reads the pieces of paper that are left next to the type writer. The paper said that he will no jump off the bridge until he discusses it with his dad so that gives him some hope. After the long 1st night Kate finds out that one child did not eat the candy. That childs name is Raymond. Raymond provides some help and hope to Kate but both soon run out when Raymond is killed because one of their men was shot and killed. That man was Antibee. After that occurs Kate decides to use the spare key and drive off the bridge. When she dose the engine dies out and she is stopped. Then Artkin and Stroll (the driver of the van) Receive the news that their leader Sedeete was captured. Artkin doesnt believe it so he asks for proof and wants on of the generals sons to deliver a rock that Sedeete had from their home land. The child chosen was Ben and was given false info without knowing it. When forced by Artkin to tell them everything he knows he tells them false info without knowing that it is not true. He tells tem that they are planning an attack at 0 AM tomorrow morning. When the attack finally comes it is at 80 am so stroll and Artkin were killed and Miro killed Kate ad escaped. After completing Ben’s Journals Mark find out that Ben jumped off the bridge because he couldnt live with the fact that he was given false info because he was expected to let down his country. The Conflict In the book I read the characters have a lot of conflicts to overcome. The characters that have conflicts in the story are Miro Miro is the one that has the most conflicts in the story and he overcomes most of them. Some conflicts that he has is when Artkin gives him a mission and he fails it or leaves it incomplete. For example Miro was told to keep an eye on the girl but the girl nearly escapes. Also he has to overcome the calls of nature, but fortunately he has trained his body to handle that kind of things. He also has to overcome the periods of time spent in the bus just waiting. Miro hates waiting he likes action. He also has to overcome the sexual feelings for Kate because he doesnt want to become involved with her because his mission is to kill her. Artkin Since Artkin is the leader of the group he really has no problems to deal with. There is only one problem he approaches and that is the negotiations with the generals. Ben Ben really only has one big problem. That is that he was expected to let his country down and that eventually lead him to his death. Kevin Kevin also has the problem of talking to Ben and thinking that he was responsible for him committing suicide. He never really overcomes that. Kate Kate has to overcome a lot in the story. She has to overcome the fact that she is eventually going to die. She also has to overcome her own far and tend the children. Also it took Kate a long time to dig up the courage to try to drive the bus off the bridge. The Theme The theme of my story is fairly simple. What Robert Cormier is trying to get across to the reader is that even thought the crime is planned well you’ll never get away with it. I think that this is very true. I also share that feeling. Rating On a scale from 1 to 10 this book gets an . The this book gets a ten is because this book was basically the master of suspense. This book kept me interested from the first word to the last page. However the reason this book gets a less than a perfect score is that the ending could have been better. On a scale form 1 to 10 the character get a also. My favorite character was Miro because I can relate to many of his feelings and thoughts of fear and failure. In high school, juniors and seniors would study long hours for the S.A.T.’s, fill out long college applications, as they prepare their outfits weeks ahead for the prom. Unlike them, I isolated myself from everyone as I mourned for my best friend, Evelyn.

Losing a loved one is one of the worst torments I have ever experienced, especially at such a young age. It was difficult for me to accept her death. Until now, I still wish she were here.




Evelyn and I were the best of friends. In fact, we were so close; we considered each other as actual sisters. There were times where Evelyn would keep to herself whenever a problem would be too difficult for her to handle. Her feelings would bottle up and she would explode into tears as she thinks of suicide for a solution to any of her problems. She was too proud to ask for help as she acts like nothing was bothering her. Her “happy-go-lucky” act soon disappears as she locks herself in her room, thinking that her misery would go away along with her life.

All of Evelyn’s suicidal attempts never succeeded but I would always find scars, bruises, or even burn marks on her body. It just hurts to see how troublesome she’s feeling, especially when she hides her troubles behind a smile at school. After realizing the signs of suicide she had showed, I immediately gave her my full attention. She would avoid all of my questions that concerned her well being.

I began to worry about her, so I sat with her and offered her any help she needed. At first she denied having any problems, assuring me that everything’s fine. I gave her a puzzled look, as I pulled her bandaged wrist and in an irritated tone, I asked, “Then what the hell is this all about?” I became angry with her when silence became her response. I became harsh on Evelyn as I expressed my thoughts on our friendship. I didn’t mean to make her feel even worse than she already is. It just sucks having a best friend who would rather hurt herself than to cry on my shoulder whenever she would need me. She made it seem like I was a stranger or I was too busy for her when she knows that all she has to do is call.

On April 6, 17, Evelyn called to invite me to her nephew’s christening. On that same day, I had a date to the Junior Prom and my younger sister would be arriving from the Philippines, so I wasn’t sure what time I would be able to attend her nephew’s party. Uncertain, I told her that I would call her after prom.

I did not enjoy my Junior Prom at all. For some reason, I had this real bad feeling that I shouldn’t have gone. Although I wasn’t enjoying myself, I tried to have fun with my date. I didn’t want to ask him to drop me home early after he spent so much for that night. Around 1000 o’clock that evening, my date dropped me home. I thanked him gratefully as I rushed to get into my house. As soon as I entered through the door, all of my family members greeted me with hugs and kisses as they appeared out of nowhere. I tried to quickly greet them back without being rude and disrespectful, as I tried to dash my way through the phone.

Before I could dial Evelyn’s phone number, I recognized a familiar voice behind me insulting my dress, “Yuck! What an ugly dress!” my sister, Sharon exclaimed. Then she yelled, “You mad now because I’m back, that’s why you’re not welcoming me home?” I slightly turned around and lightly slapped my little sister’s head as I laughed at her silly remark. I gave her a hug and welcomed her back while I was on the phone trying to contact Evelyn.

Evelyn answered the phone with an annoyed tone in her voice. I greeted her and asked, “Guess who’s back from the Philippines?” “NO WAY! SHARON?” Evelyn asked with excitement. Evelyn asked me to bring my sister along to her nephew’s party but the only problem was our ride. I asked her if she could pick us up but she couldn’t because she was too busy helping out with the party. “So how’s this then? I wanna see Sharon,” as Evelyn demanded. Finally we made an agreement to meet up tomorrow afternoon. The next day, Evelyn never called and whenever I would call, there was no answer. I figured she was tired so I didn’t bother calling back. I had no idea that last night would be our last conversation.

The weekend passed and it was back to school. Like any ordinary Monday, I walked my way through the halls to get to our hangout, with no knowledge of Evelyn’s death. As soon as I arrived to the hangout, my cousin approached me and told the sad news. Shocked by what she said, I simply laughed and said “WHATEVERS!” My cousin gave me this grave look and I knew she was serious. As I was still in denial, I asked if she was joking. My cousin pulled out a small clip from the newspaper and there it read “….Evelyn Gagarin, 16, of Dededo, committed suicide during a family function….making Gagarin number 7 for Guam’s suicide rate.”

At that point, I became hysterical and caused a big scene, not knowing that the entire student body was watching. I just couldn’t believe she was gone and I didn’t want to believe that she was never coming back. Realizing how much her death affected me, I became careless. I was unable to concentrate in school and soon my grades dropped dramatically. In an instant, I dropped from an “A student” to a “D student.” My teachers became concerned as they would hand me my progress report during the middle of third quarter. I knew I was on the verge of failure but I didn’t care.

One of my teachers knew I needed help, so she suggested seeing the counselor. Even though I felt obligated, I knew secluding myself was not the answer. Quietly, I did what I was told because I knew that if I didn’t seek any help, I would end up like Evelyn. After experiencing this situation, I wouldn’t want to make anyone else feeling the same torture that I have. Anyone could easily be mentally depressed when they lose a loved one.

As the counselor slowly helped me express my emotions, I realized how angry I was at her and at the same time, deeply hurt that I would never see her again. After long hours in the counselor’s office, I couldn’t believe how much weight I have lifted off by talking to someone. Although I was still in mourning, I decided to move on with my life.

Even if Evelyn is not with me physically, she would always be with me in my heart.

By the end of the school year, I caught up with my make-up assignments and received passing grades. Then I became comfortable talking to other friends about how I felt when Evelyn passed away. There are other people who care about me as much as I did with Evelyn and I can’t just shut them out of my life so I accepted the fact that she was gone and there’s nothing I can do to bring her back. It was kind of hard at first, but I can’t feel depressed forever.

The stories we hear are retched from the gullet. This is the real world, horrific, debauched, stripped of all false niceities and raw; a trip back to the dark ages, or a wake-up call from reality?

i thought this book was of excellent quality, mind boggoling but full of charisma and excitment.
