Many events brought change to the United States. One event that changed
the American nation was the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was a great tragedy for the
American people. It all happend on Sunday, Decemeber 7, 141. The Japenese had
attacked and bombed Pearl Harbor located in Oahu, Hawaii. The Japanese came

What were the events that lead to this tragedy? Well from the start Japan had
many problems. They relayed on raw materials, such as oil from other countries. Japan
began to improve its empire by organizing a good army and navy. Later on the Japanese
military became involved with its government which caused them trouble. Manchuria had
become part of the Japanese political system after the Japenese had seized it by wining a
battle. Other battles were fought after that and those lead to the second Sino-Japanese
War.
Germany wont the first couple of battles of World War 1. They seized many
countries including South East Asia, and since it contained the resources Japan needed,
they felt that they should be able to take over some of the territories too.
While these events were taking place, in the United States President Franklin D.
Roosevelt (FDR) wanted to stop or slow down the seizing of countries done by both Japan
and Germany. The United States had a political and economic interests in South East Asia,
was intruded by these Japanese moves. To help out the countries at war with Germany and
Japan they began to supply materials useful to slow them down. In Europe the Axis of
Alliance was formed. This included Japan, Italy, and Germany. Later on the Japanese
needed more resources so they wanted to seize South East Asia and they began with
Indochina. When the United States found out that this was happining they stopped and
took control over a shipment of oil going to Japan. Since the Japanese people needed the
oil to keep its technology progressive, they felt that the United States wanted to go to war
with them, and that by embargoing the oil shipment they wanted to interfere, but really
the United States wanted to remain nuetral.
The Unites States wanted to resolve this problem. In order to settle the situation,
Japan wanted the United States to not interfere with them or the oil shipments. The only
way the United States allowed this is if the Japanese people ended their takeover of South
East Asia. They both did not come to an agreement, so the United States put up a military
force station in the Pacific. The United States Pacific fleet was usually stationed somwhere
near the West coast of the United States. Since they knew that a war with Japan was
possible they moved to the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii. The United States was
scheduled to return sooner but that was changed because the increasing activity of the Axis
of Alliance to take over South East Asia. One of the commanders knew that it would be a
bad idea to stay staioned at Pearl harbor and he wanted to put up nets just incase of any
incoming bombs, but that was never followed through and that man was fired and after
that everyone else didnt interfere or say what they though would or could prevent what
was happening.
The British torpedo bombers launched an attack on Italy on the Taranto Harbor on
Novemeber 1, 140. After the United States heard of this they were scared that it would
happen to them at Pearl harbor. The Pacific fleet was used for three reasons. The first is to
capture the Marshall and Caroline. The second reason was to stop all trade routes located
in Japan. The third reason was for the United States to defend its mainland , Guan and
Hawaii.
The commander in cheif of the Japanese fleet was Isoroku Yamamoto. He designed a
plan to stop and destroy the United States Pacific fleet. In doing this he hoped to scare
them into signing a peace settlement, giving the Japanese power in the Pacific . Yamamoto
plan to stop the United States was a very fully though plan. He knew he needed to attack
on suprise. That all the United states aircrafts had to be destroyed soo that that will be a
disadvantage for the Americans . The Japanses would also have to refual at sea and by
making a suprise attack during early sunrise will give them a good advantage since
everyone would be sleeping and no one would expect an attack during that time. He also
though that all japanese aircrafts and all different kinds of bombs schould be included in
the attack. The Japanese sent a fourteen part message which gave them a clue of a possible
Japanese attack.
The Bombing began at 755am on December 7, 141 , on Wheeler Feild, which is eight
miles away from Pearl harbor. The attack force commanded was Vice Admiral Chuichi
Nagumo. One hundred and eighty three Japanese planes started bombing and destroying
everything in their sight. The telegraph that was sent to the United States had arrived to
late to hawaii.
On that day eight battle ships were damaged, along with a couple of smaller U.S
ships. Two thousand three hundred and thirty five servicemen were killed and also sixty
eight civilians were killed also. There were one thousand one hundred seventy eight people
wounded. The worst attack was taken by the U.S.S Arizona. The Japanese losses weren’t
that bad. Twenty-nine planes didnt return to their carriers. That was less than 10 percent
of the attacking force
In the end many people had lost family memebers, friends, and loved ones all to be blamed
on the Japanese. Though throughout World War , the United States wanted to remain
equal, they couldn’t just let what had happen go by like that without a fight or vengance in

The Japanese succese in the bombing wasn’t at all successful. They failed to damage
all the United States Aircraft carriers. They also didnt damage the shoreside facilties at the

Four Babies of Rodom #
There were four precious babies this week that I was blessed to be with at the time of their birth. On Monday, Cheryl stayed at our apartment so I was able to go with Molly to the Rodom for the day. At the time I enjoyed the one on one training, but because I understand quite a bit of Russian Molly didnt translate nearly as much as she would have had Cheryl been there. But it was good for me to have to listen and concentrate on understanding. This week has turned out to be one of stretching my limits of the Russian language.
This weeks first baby was Maria. Her mom had been trying to have a child for years and had not been able to. Then this year she was able to get pregnant. It was such a blessing to be able to witness the love the parents of this little girl had for her and how excited they were of her arrival. It did take them about four days to decide on a name though. A very common trouble in Russia. Which name to choose?!?
Our second baby this week was Julia. =) I told the parents it was an honor for me to have them name their baby after their American midwife! Of course she would have gotten that name even if I hadnt been there, but it was a nice thought. Dont you think?
The third baby this week as Arsini. His mom has several health problems related to her ability to carry a pregnancy to term and so his birth was anticipated with great delight. He is the second child to be born to this family, although there have been four miscarriages/stillbirths also. They are also a Jewish family which is still a rarity in Russia I am told. This mom did speak some English, so it was interesting to get to talk to her a couple times.
Baby number four this week as on Saturday. A young 18-year-old mother went into labor early Saturday morning. Once we arrived at the hospital she was doing well. Very calm and talkative for a while. Then she started concentrating more on her labor, but still remained very calm. A lot of times the younger mothers are the more fearful and have a harder time with it, but this girl would be given a reward for her calm, cool, and collected way she gave birth. Her husband was there with her, as well as her mother and they had a much harder time with the effects of labor! Another girl, Kristina was born early afternoon and we were able to help this family adjust well.
After the complications of last week (fetal distress, unstable blood pressure, resuscitating babies, and everything else we saw) this week was a breeze! None of the women were given epidurals, so the babies were quicker to respond immediately after birth. Only one was on an IV during her labor, so they were able to move as they needed. Only a couple of them had minor lacerations. It was so good to see how normally (and even the couple all natural) birth could really be. These moms did so well and their babies were the healthiest we had seen!
Life in Russia
Several people have asked about specific areas of Russian life, so I thought I would take the time to give a little overview.
Russian people are some of the most hospitable people on earth. Once you meet one you will be friends forever and they are most likely to give you anything they have. If you know you are going to a Russians home for a meal, dont eat anything before you go. This week I was in four different Russian homes and each time I was filled with food to overflowing, or at least it felt that way. They dont understand the concept of someone telling them they are full. How could that be? There is still food here on the table! And just so you are prepared, if you ever do have a meal with a Russian family, remember they usually ALWAYS have tea afterwards. So eat, but do it slowly, so you have time to digest everything. If you clear your plate that must mean you are still hungry and they will fill it up again for you!
Shopping in Russia is nothing like it is in America. The Russians have always done it this way so they are used to it, but if America even tried it most people would be totally frustrated! See, if you walk into a normal store here there are not normal isles like in America. EVERYTHING is behind or under a counter. (Kind of like it would be at a nice jewelry store in America). You have to find all the things you want, and then go to the cashier and tell her what you want and how much it costs. Then you pay, then you go to the counter where the things are you want and give your receipt to another lady who gives you your items. =) There are also open markets everywhere, where people set up their little booths of wares and food items and you walk up and tell them what you want. =) Ok, so there are a FEW grocery stores where you can go and they are set up as close to what a Russian that has never been to America can imagine the stores there being like. But there is a catch. You have to give the coat lady your bag/purse/backpack before you go in the store. Then you get a basket and go get what you want and then stand in a long line for the cashier. You also have to pay for a bag if you want to put your groceries in one! Can you imagine having to pay for every Wal-Mart bag??? They cost one ruble a piece which is approximately three cents. Its always an adventure!
You Speak Russian!?!
This weekend has been a weekend to stretch the limits of my Russian ability past the breaking point! Saturday night we were with a family for several hours as we visited with them and Molly was able to catch up on some things she needed to do. Molly left Cheryl and I with Leanna (the mother of the family) in the kitchen to talk while she was doing something on the computer. I didnt think she would be gone long, but it turned into over an hour. So for that long I tried to come up with enough to say that was understandable as Leanna kept asking us questions about our lives in America and our families. Translating into English for Cheryl wasnt bad at all. I got just about everything Leanna said. From English into Russian was a whole different story! Leanna said that she understood everything though, so that was encouraging! After we had been talking one of her sons, came in and started talking with us also. He speaks English well, and so was able to help translate. THEN he tells me that his mother was a Russian language teacher for years before she started working at the Department of Education here in Lomonosov. After that I could only think of what she must be thinking about how I am butchering her beautiful language! She was very gracious though and I was very grateful for her patience.
It seems that lately I have been understanding more as I am with the Russian people and trying to communicate. The Lord has really blessed me so much with the ability to communicate well when needed. Several people lately once introduced to me and realize that I understand the first few sentences they speak, look at Molly and say, Oh, she speaks Russian! to which Molly always says, yeah, she understands a little bit. =) Praise the Lord for what I DO understand!

The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 16 was a very controversial issue for the United States. On the morning of October 16, when it was brought to the United States attention that Russia was placing atomic weapons in Cuba, after the frenzy that first seized the Cabinet, the main question on everybodys mind was, how are we going to deal with this problem? The photography having indicated that the missiles were being directed at certain American cities, the estimate was that within a few minutes of their being fired eighty million Americans would be dead (Kennedy 5). It was too risky to have no reaction to this crisis at all. At first the Russians claimed that there were no weapons to be found in Cuba, and completely denied the fact that missile bases were being constructed as well as the missiles themselves. Later when it became obvious that there were weapons in Cuba, Russia defended themselves by saying they were being used to help Cuba become a stronger country. From the beginning it was clear that the Russians could not be trusted, …we realized that it had all been lies, one gigantic fabric of lies.
