Performance

The Sabre is a single handed dinghy, suitable for people ranging in age from early teens upwards into the late seventies. It has been variously described as the fun single handed dinghy and a boat for all ages. The Sabre provides thrilling performance, especially in heavier breezes and sea conditions.

Safety

The Sabre was designed with safety as an uppermost feature. The boat is unsinkable due to the three independent buoyancy tanks incorported in the design. Once capsized, the Sabre comes up easily and dry. Another safety feature is the watertight mast, which also helps in the righting of a capsized boat.

Design History

The Sabre dinghy was designed by Rex Fettel whilst a member of the Carrum Sailing Club in Victoria, and the class has been in existance for in excess of 5 years. Sail numbers have now reached the mid 1500’s (year 000) and Sabres are sailed in all southern states of Australia.

The Sabre design is now owned and controlled by the Sabre Sailing Association and as the Sabre is a strict one-design class, this helps to control expenses and keep boat costs to a minimum.

Specifications

Sabre dinghies are .77 metres (1’4’’)long, with a minimum weight of 41 kgs (0 lbs). Sail area is 6.4sq. metres (6 sq. ft.) with a high aspect ratio and a loose foot. Other class specifications and requirements include-

Maximum Beam 1.47 metres (4’ 10’’)

Draft with Centreboard down - 0.76 metres (’ 6’’)

Maximum depth of Hull- 0.48 metres (1’’’) Approx.

Sailing controls are limited to a mainsheet, an 81 boom vang, a cunningham or luff tensioning downhaul, and limited travel of the clew by means of a simple outhaul tackle. No on water adjustments may be carried out to standing rigging

Construction

Construction is simple, using the stitched marine plywood and fibreglass tape method.(commonly known as stitch and glue). Amateur builders can usually build a Sabre in approximately 40 hours. Fill size templates and comprehensive building notes available from the Association ensure ease of construction. Professionally built fibreglass boats are also available, and these are subject to the same measurements and rules as amateur constructed boats.

Launching and Transport

Sabre dinghies can be readily launched and retrieved single handedly, but the camaradie amongst Sabre sailors everywhere generally ensures that you are not alone. Sabres are often transported on road on beach trolleys which in turn are mounted on road trailers and towed behind the family car.
