The short story is a very old literary form. Its origins can be traced back to the Old Testament stories with all the parables, fables, and whatnot. However, the short story dates back to about the last half of the nineteenth century with practitioners like Poe, Hawthorne, and Chekhov. The short story is concerned with a single effect and often focuses on one character or even episode. It deals with a single moment of crisis or conflict in which some truth is revealed. The writing is intense and concentrated, so that all aspects of the story reflect careful crafting. Many people think that short stories are similar to novels, in which they are led by a large misconception. The short story has separate formal characteristics than a novel.

Before the age of mass literacy, it was common for the story to be used as a medium for teaching or preaching a specific moral. Fables narrate an extremely simple story that exaggerates character and motive through animal protagonists. The animal protagonist points to a highly specific moral that can usually be codified in a single sentence. The parable, like the fable, is a simple narrative that leads the reader in a specific interpretation of the story. It exists primarily as “closed text”.

The modern short story owes some of its origin to the fable and parables; however, it came into being largely as a result of the raise of the popular literary magazine in the nineteenth century.

Short story writers must develop their narrative technique, and devices that will work well to suggest something fast. There is no room for weakness. Writers must be able to shape something, an incident perhaps, into a memorable scene right away, without the comfort of developing the incident too much.

The North's advantages in the Civil War

The North clearly had many advantages before the Civil War began. However, it is not fair to say that they had won the war before it started. They had many advantages over the South, but the South had a fair chance of winning. Both the North and the South had their share of advantages and disadvantages.

The North had the advantage of controlling the sea and most of the railroads. It had the Ohio River, three-fourths of the nation’s railroads and ninety percent of the nation’s wealth in its territory. The North had a very strong navy and was able to set up a blockade to stop trade all trade routes going to and from the South. At first, this blockade was unsuccessful, but soon it prevented the South from receiving the war supplies it needed. The blockade also caused damage to the South’s economy because they were unable to trade with Europe. This caused a shortage of food, clothing and medicine in the South. The South had a big disadvantage because it did not even have a navy at the start of the war.

The North had factories, farms and many trade connections. Its factories produced weapons and uniforms for fighting. Its farms grew corn and other essential crops. The South only had farms and plantations. The South produced cash crops to export to the North and to Europe. The South was at a big disadvantage because it depended on the North’s services in order to trade. Therefore, during the war, the South was unable to trade, because it did not have the proper resources.

The North had the ability to keep foreign aid away from the South. The North, unlike the South, had an established government. If the South wanted something, they weren’t able to do it themselves because they did not have a government or any relations with foreign countries. Therefore, the North had to do everything for them. Once the war started, the South was a big disadvantage because they were unable to establish relations or get aid from foreign countries.

The North had a very large population of twenty two million people. The South had a population of nine million. During the war, the North’s population was constantly increasing because of the influx of European immigrants. The South’s population did not increase during the war, because no immigrants were able to get to the South because of the lack of transportation. Thus, the North had a greater military potential with a bigger population.

One advantage the South had was that its men knew how to fight very well. All the southern men learned how to fight when they were young. They had good cavalrymen and foot soldiers. They had much better officers than the North, such as Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson. The northerners were brought up in cities. Therefore, once the war began, they had to start training the men. They were not as familiar with weapons and horses as the southerners. Ulysses S. Grant, the North’s best officer, didn’t play a role until the end of the war.

The South had the advantage of fighting a defensive war. The southerners had an easier time because they knew the land better. They also didn’t need as many troops, because they didn’t have to travel. The South only had to defend itself while the North had to defeat the South in order to win. The South did not need to defeat the North in order to gain its independence.

It is clear that the North had many more advantages than the South. The North had more control over essential powers. The South also had many advantages, but their disadvantages outweighed the advantages. The South was not as strong, but they put up a good fight. The fact that the South depended on the North’s services led them towards their downfall. The North did not win before the war started, but they had a head start.

The Crucible

‘The Crucible’ is a play set in Massachusetts in 16 at the time of the Salem witch trials, written by Arthur Miller. It follows one mans moral struggle, at the end of which he must choose between his life and his principles.

By examining the techniques used by Arthur Miller in the play and the theme of personal integrity I will show how they were used to give a climactic ending.

‘respected and even feared man in Salem’

John Proctor is a highly thought of member of the community. He is seen as ‘an untroubled soul’, a strict Christian, the man who ‘nailed the roof upon the church’. But Proctor knows he is not the perfect Christian, he is a sinner. He has committed the sin of lechery with the niece of Reverend Parris’, Abigail Williams. This affair shows a dip in Proctors’ personal integrity as lechery is not only a sin but it goes against

‘his own vision of orderly conduct’.

The only other who knows of Proctors’ affair is his wife Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is always suspicious of Proctor returning to Abigail.

‘What keeps you so late? It’s almost dark’

This quote shows that Elizabeth is suspicious that Proctor is still seeing even though he was denied it. Proctor tries to make it up to Elizabeth in many ways, one of which is his seasoning of or her stew she is making without her knowing. He does this so he can compliment her on a well-seasoned stew. Though it seems Proctors attempts are in vein, as Elizabeth will only change her mind when she is sure the affair is over.

Abigail has a very noticeable lack of personal integrity that is evident throughout the play. She lies to get her way and threatens her friends to make sure her plan is successful. Her plan is to have Elizabeth convicted of witchcraft so she can replace Elizabeth as Proctors wife. Despite Proctors attempts to repel Abigail she continues to try and seduce him.

‘Give me a word John, a soft word’

She is like the devil tempting Proctor to sin. Proctor is true to his wife and his word, he does not encourage her.

‘I never give you hope to wait for me’

Abigail is a threatening person even towards her friends;

‘let either of you breathe a word, or edge or a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.’

Abigail will pretend to faint in court to fool the judges into thinking she is being attacked by people sending their spirits on her.

When Proctors and his wife are accused he shows great personal integrity by throwing away his good name and admitting to lechery to save his wife.

‘I have known her’

This will reveal Abigail’s intent if Elizabeth confirms the sin. As Proctor think she will do.

‘My wife cannot lie’

But to save her husbands she does what she thinks to be the right thing to do and denies the Proctor committed the sin, with the intention of saving him. This however only complicated matters. He feels though he cannot lie to save his life as he doesn’t see himself fit to hang among the other accused as it would make him look like a saint which he knows he is not.

‘I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. I am not that man’

Proctor debates with himself and comes to an apparent conclusion.

He decides that since he is already damned for sinning lying again can’t make it worse so he signs the confession. This is a big disappointment to the reader as Proctor loses much personal integrity. To try and lessen the sin he confesses in a round about way.

‘I want my life’

This is interpreted as a confession and is the truth, as he does want his life. Though when asked who else he saw with the devil Proctor replies,

‘I speak my own sins. I cannot judge another, I have no tongue for it.’

This shows he will not have anyone else suffer because of him. The court demands Proctor sign a confession so as they can nail it to the church for all of Salem to see. At this Proctor is most displeased,

‘I have three children How may I teach them to walk like men in the world and I sold my friends?’

He wants to keep his name for his children so they are not ashamed of him. His name is very important to him and he feels he has given away what he thinks of himself so wants to keep what others think of him,

‘How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!’

Proctor reluctantly signs the confession though when asked for it back he rips it up, restoring his personal integrity. When told he cant rip the confession, condemning himself,

‘I can. And there’s your first marvel, that I can. You have made your magic now, for now I do see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs.’

This is the climactic ending which the I would prefer to him signing the confession and living, he takes the heroic path.

Proctors’ indecision leads to great tension, as it is not known whether he will sign the confession or not. When he does the reader is let down, but when it is ripped up and he delivers his speech his integrity is restored and the reader feels happier at him making the morally correct choice.

“I don’t know why I’m here, I mean I don’t even know how to talk properly when it comes to performing”

“Come on, I know you can do it”

“I know how about you try out and I’ll just wait”

“No, Summer William, when your name is called you are going to go in there and give them all you got, just pretend your practicing in front of me”

“Okay what ever you say”

“I mean it, Summer you have to try, this is the best school in the world, it specializes in acting, if you land a place here, your most likely to be a star”

“Who else has become a star from here?”

“Umm, Nicole Kidman, Brad Pitt I think even Heath Ledger came here, and now look where they are”

“Summer William’s”

“OK it’s your turn now, show em what you got”

I walked into the room, and saw three people sitting at a desk, they all looked very serious and immediately I knew they were the judges,

“Now Summer, what would you be presenting to us today?”

“Well I was studying Romeo and Juliet at school and decided to the part where Juliet is out near the pool before Romeo comes”

“OK, begin”

At that I played my piece of Juliet, at first I was a little scared but then it just took over me. When I act my body just lets it self go and I just do it. Finally I finished my part and the judges took awhile to write down some more notes, I was told to go and wait in the waiting room,

“Kasey, over here”

“Hey how did it go?”

“It was fun, I was abit shaky at the beginning but then my body did that thing”

“Where it just takes over”

“Exactly”

“Well, that’s good then, hey my name was just called, wait for me okay”

“Okay, good luck”

“I’ll be needing it”

To me it seemed ages waiting for Kasey, I knew then that she was definitely in, otherwise they wouldn’t take so much time talking to her and stuff, I knew they were talking to her because her piece wasn’t very long. Finally she walked out with a big grin on her face,

“You’ll never guess what happened”

“What?”

“I’m definitely in, they told me in there because I was so good, I have to wait out here”

“They told me to wait aswell”

“Great, maybe then you’re in too, oh I hope so”

We waited until a lot of other people had gone in to try out, and a lot of them left straight after, some even looked as if they were about to cry. In the end it was Kasey and I, about 7 boys and 6 other girls, the three judges appeared again and we were all invited back into the performing room, we took a seat on the floor and one of the judges stood up,

“Now all of you here have great skills in acting and at Wimberly Community Acting College that’s what we specialize in. But as you see there are 15 of us here and we are only allowed to take in 5. After many debates we have come up with 5 different people, now if you are not chosen please don’t take it the wrong way. But we had to pick the best of the best, but fell free to come back and re try next year if you’re under 15, thank you. Now the judges will come up and call out the 5 people that have made it next year, if your name is called please wait over by the door, if not please make you way back through that door”

“Right one, Jordan Claim, two, Kasey Limn, three, William Levee. Four, Alex Mcleod and five Summer William’s”

“Oh my god, we did it”

“Kasey we both got in”

We jumped up and hugged each other while the people that didn’t make it left. We then waited by the door with the other three that had made it, they were all boys and obviously they all knew each other,

“Hey I’m Jordan”

“Hi, I’m Kasey and this is my best friend Summer”

“Hi” said the other guys smirking,

“So what skit did you use to compete?”

“I did the part from Romeo and Juliet where she is on the balcony by herself”

“And I did, I part I made up myself”

“Cool, we did ours together, we did the three musketeers”

“Right if you would follow me, we will give your papers and call you a ride home, you will be expected to of handed your papers in by the end of this week with or without fee’s, any questions?”

“Yes Umm, when exactly do we come back here”

“You will be returning here 1 week before normal schooling begins with your luggage so you can get settled in and get to know your new surroundings, also so when the year really starts we can get straight into it”

“Okay”

We all received our papers and waited for the taxi that would be taking us all home, the boys were all dropped off at Alex’s house and Kasey and I were dropped off in front of my house. Kasey only had to walk next door.

“Hey Mum, I got in”

“Really hunny, how wonderful”

“Here are the papers, they need to be back before the week is out”

“Let me see them”

She took the papers and studied them for awhile,

“I think we can let you go here sweety, I’ll take you there tomorrow for you to take your papers in and on the way we can drop by the bank”

“Cool, hey Kasey got in aswell”

“Great, I’m going over there soon, for a cuppa with her mum, I’ll ask if she wants me to take you and Kasey out tomorrow to hand in your papers”

“Her mum might say no though”

“No I spoke to her Mum this morning and she said if Kasey did get in she was going to let her go”

“Ok cool”

I went and got myself some lemonade and sat and watched some TV, I was in the middle of watching Ricki Lake when the phone rang,

“I’ll get it,” I yelled,

I ran to the phone and picked it up,

“Hello, Summer William’s speaking”

“Summer its Kasey,”

“Hey wassup?”

“I spoke to Mum about Wimberly and she said I could go”

“That’s great, I’m allowed too, infact mum is taking me tomorrow”

“I know your mum is here now and I’m going with you, my mum is going to give me her card to draw the money out when we’re at the bank”

“Cool, hey out my mum on for a sec”

“OK”

She yelled for my Mum and my mum came to the phone,

“Hello, Summer”

“Hey mum, seen as though Kasey is coming with us tomorrow can she stay the night”

“Sure thing”

“Great, well I’ll go now and you tell her to come over right now”

“OK, Bye”

She hung up the phone and I went and had a shower and got in my pj’s. I made up Kasey’s bed and then she came over,

“Hey again”

“Hello”

“I’m just making myself something to eat, want anything”

“What you making?”

“Nutella Sandwiches”

“OK, you haven me addicted to Nutella”

“I know”

We made our sandwiches and went and sat down to watch our favourite show ‘Home and Away’. We then went in my room, and gave eachother make over’s and played some board games,

“Hey, I know why they call board games board games”

“OK why?”

“Because, when you have nothing to do your bored, and when you have nothing to do you play board games, get it bored games”

“OK then”

We finished playing the game and brushed our teeth and went to bed, we lay there talking then drifted off to sleep.

“Girls come on wake up”

“What’s the time” I asked sleepily,

“Almost 100”

“Ok, hold on”

We got up and went and had showers, and got ready to go out,

“I’m so excited”

“Me too”

“Hey Summer, what did you think of those boys yesterday”

“Who Jordan, Alex and the other guy?”

“William”

“Yeah that’s it”

“What did you think?”

“What do you mean what did I think?”

“Well do you think there cute?”

“No”

“What?”

“There not cute, there gorgeous”

“Oh thank god, I thought you had lost your taste or something”

“No, I especially think Jordan is a cutie”

“He’s okay but I think Alex”

“Yeah, he’s alright”

“I’m wonder if there allowed”

“Yeah same”

We got into the car and Mum drove to the bank, we jumped out and Mum drew out her money and then we waited for Kasey to get her’s. We then got back in the car and headed to Wimberly,

“So you girls stay there right?”

“Yeah, it’s like a bording school Mum”

“OK”

“But it’s different I mean you go there because you want to, not because you have to”

“OK”

We arrived at the school, from the outside it looks like one of those really posh schools from the old days, you know made of stone. When you get inside it’s all oak floors and fancy draws and desks and things. We were shown to the main office and went in and sat down waiting, the principal who we hadn’t met yet was there with the judge who had chosen us and given us our appers,

“Miss Shepherd, these are two more of the new students that will be attending the new year”

“Well I hope they enjoy it here”

We sat and spoke to the principal for awhile, the left with the school list for the things we needed.

“Bye Mum, see ya on the holidays”

“Bye sweety have a good time, remember if you change your mind and don’t like it you can always come home”

“OK bye”

Kasey and I ran up the stairs and into the building, all the students were arriving an heading up to there usual rooms, to unpack. But Kasey and I were new so we had to go straight to the office and taken to our rooms. We arrived in the office and placed our luggage out of the way in a corner, and sat in a couple of chairs,

“I can’t wait for the actual year to begin”

“Yeah me too”

We were having a great conversation about us being movie stars and stuff when we were older, when Alex, Jordan and William walked in,

“Hey Summer and Kasey”

“Hey you guys”

“So you decided to come”

“Yeah why wouldn’t we be?”

“Just wondering”

We sat talking amongst ourselves and the boys ended up being very interesting. The Principle walked past a couple of times not noticing us there but when she walked past for the third time she realized,

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry, I’ll get someone to show you to your rooms”

She ran back out of the office and was back with an older looking girl about the age of 16,

“This is Rebecca, the head girl this year, she will take the girls to their room, and the biys will wait for Thomas”

We waved be to the boys and followed Rebecca,

“Your going to love it here”

“Is it good?”

“You bet this school is by far one of the finest in the whole of America, but remember put one step out of line and you’ll be packing your basg and heading home again”

As I read the review of “The St. Lawrence and the Saguenay” by Sir Daniel Wilson, I found that Mr. Wilson enjoyed the poem and felt very strongly about its content, good and bad. He starts off his review by giving a recap of poetry, suggesting its nature and origin in relation to Canada. He then begins to analyze the poem, giving examples from the poem to further emphasize his points. He does this affectively by using detailed descriptions, thus is able to explain the various historical connections within the poem. He’s very knowledgeable of the poem and it’s contents, and this helps him as he continues on in his review. He then begins to express his concerns for the poem, but still notes that it contains pieces of great Canadian writing. He continues on, despite his concerns, expressing his thoughts on Mr. Sangster, and how he still delivers a interesting look at the great St. Lawrence and Saguenay rivers history. Wilson liked the poem, although he does hint that it may be historically misleading, seemingly referring to its contents as old views, not new. He concludes his review by quoting some favorite stanza’s from the poem, then explains his thoughts on these stanza’s, and on the poem as a whole.

Wilson’s review was very honest. I could tell he felt very strong about the remarks he was making towards the poem. I also found his use of similes very affective, and noticed how their purpose was to help his reader understand him and where he is coming from that much better. His writing style is unique, but not confusing. I did, however, have a little trouble making the same historical connections he was making, but that is mostly due to my lack of knowledge of poetry and its history. Wilson argues that the poem lacks strength and deepness which he believes is necessary. I believe he feels that the poem is more a representation of the rivers as what they are, rather than what they mean to Canadians. This is evident when he says this about the poem, “It is a pleasant and tasteful depiction of the scenes and associations of our noble river, written in the same stanza as ‘Childe Harold’, and with some echo of its mode of thought, though lacking the force and pathos of its passionate utterances.” I agree with Wilson to a certain extend, including his comments on the poems style, but I don’t believe that Sangster perhaps wanted his poem to be read that way. Wilson approaches this poem knowing of all the historical connections related to the rivers, including depressing ones. Whether right or wrong, it then affected his review of the poem in the sense that he begins to link those connections to it, causing him to perhaps misinterpret what Sangster was ultimately trying to express. This is just how I saw the review, and may very well not be the case, but I like the poem for what it is, and care not to analyze it to the extend of Mr. Wilson. I prefer to just enjoy the pleasant thoughts the poem presents. To conclude, I enjoyed Mr. Wilson’s review. I found it very insightful and informative. Although I disagreed at points, I found myself at least understanding his opinions of the poem, and his thoughts on Sangster’s writing style. As for the poem itself, it definitely had different meanings to me than it did to Wilson, but at least we can agree on the beautiful descriptions in the poem, and it’s significance to Canadian literature, “though it has in it none of those magical passages which stir the heart like the sound of a trumpet, it will nevertheless make an agreeable return to the tourist for the small space it claims in his baggage.”

Ironically, tyrants must often make decisions to please those they are suppressing. In George Orwell’s essay, “Shooting an Elephant,” the author creates a metaphor for “The real motives for which despotic governments act.” Orwell suggests that in becoming a tyrant of an imperialized nation, the ruler becomes a puppet of the people. They, like the narrator of Orwell’s essay, are driven to show no mercy or fear, make choices to please the people, and to act against their morals and better judgement to conform with their government.

In “Shooting an Elephant,” the narrator describes his feelings while approaching the elephant. Even armed with a rifle, a shadow of doubt crosses his mind. He could miss his target, in which case he would have no time to reload before being crushed by the elephant. He pushes his apprehension aside, however, because of the two thousand natives watching, judging him. He musters up false courage and shoots the elephant to the joy of the natives. Orwell points out that tyrants must do like the narrator in his essay; they must appear calm and confident at all times so the people don’t doubt them. Tyrants feel a need to prove themselves to the ones they rule, to gain respect by seeming fierce and fearless.

The peacefulness of the golf course made me feel calm inside. I pictured my first shot down the middle of the fairway while approaching the first tee box. I took out a white tee out of my off white Dockers pants and gently poked it into the ground. I placed my Calaway golf ball on the tee and stood five feet back from the ball. I went to my FVHS golf bag and took out my Taylor Made 60 driver. While taking three practice swings I mentally pictured my tee shot again. I slowly walked up to the ball and took my golf stance. I could feel my dads presence as I got ready to hit my first shot. I took the driver up and swung hard at the ball. It was a solid shot. It felt so pure that it felt like I didnt hit the ball. The ball had perfect trajectory and when to the left middle of the fairway. The ball went around two hundred and eighty yards and was around seventy

yards away for the pin. My dad was shocked at how far I hit my first shot. For my second shot I took out my 60 degree lob wedge and stood behind my ball again. I went through my procedure again. I stood five feet away from the ball lining it up with the pin, took three practice swings while mentally picturing my shot going near the hole. After my procedure I walked up to the ball and took my stance again, but this time my feet were slightly closer together. I was more relaxed the my first shot because my dad wasnt as close to me and I felt like I was not as pressured to hit another great shot. I took the club back and swung hard again. Another solid shot. It felt exactly like my tee shot...pure. I hit my second shot right of the pin and landed about six feet from the cup. My dad was surprised how close I got my second shot. This was the first time I had played golf with him in a year and did not expect me to improve this much. As I walked closer to the green I started to tremble. I started to question myself... Can I make this putt?... Are you confident in your putting right now?. All these questions were going through my head and I felt like something bad was going to happen. When I got to the green I marked my ball with my Los Coyote ball marker and stood away from it. I let my dad and the other people in my group go first because I did not want to miss this birdie opportunity. I read the green carefully and it looked like it was going to break right to left about three inches. I hate those putts because they are the ones that you have to have perfect control of the speed and direction. Those putt are the trickiest for me and my friend. I walked up to my marker and placed my ball and the green. I took my putting stance and lined up my putter three inches right of the cup. I breathed slowly and took my putter back and gently hit the ball. it seemed so long for the ball to move towards the cup. It looked as if I was going to lip out my birdie putt, but within the last two feet i got my break and the ball started to curve. the ball hit the left side of the cup and went in. It felt so good making that putt and I felt so proud of myself. I could tell that my dad was proud of me to by the smile on his face. After the round of golf my dad and I had a common interest in golf and we play more rounds with each other.

“Christmas on the Great Plains”

Maryanne was becoming nervous as Christmas drew near. At seven years old, the magic of the holidays could not be lessened by the grim, gray landscape of the Great Plains, or the fierce prairie winds that raged outside her window. Any time now, the door would open and Dad would burst in, carrying the Christmas tree that they would decorate together. She had been watching at the window for a very long time, however, a little fear was beginning to set in.

For several days, in the little silver house in Valentine, Nebraska where Maryanne lived with her mom and dad, there had been a rush of holiday activity. Dad had gone to the reservation in South Dakota to work with the Indians that lived there, leaving the cookie baking and preparations to be done in anticipation of his return with an evergreen that he would buy from one of the Canadians who drove down with their bounty to the treeless plains. Maryanne and her mom had made paper chains and angels out of lace doilies. They bought tinsel at Woolworths and prepared the dough for gingerbread men. When the storm began, they were busy cutting the cookies and putting on the raisin buttons. It would not be Christmas in Nebraska without snow.

The storm continued throughout the night and into the next day. There was very little television reception during the best weather, so they listened to the radio hopefully.

They were used to storms, and had no doubt that Dad would make it home in plenty of time, but as the day wore on, it began to look less certain. Luckily, the power stayed on, www.buffyfanatic.com

Analysis of Photograph "Childress County, Texas" by Dororthea Lange

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Analysis of Photograph "Childress County, Texas" by Dororthea Lange even at the eleventh hour. Analysis of Photograph “Childress County, Texas”

“One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you’d be stricken blind.” That was a famous quote from the photographer, Dorothea Lange. Like Ester Bubley, Dorothea Lange documented the change on the home front, especially among ethnic groups and workers uprooted by the war. Lange’s earlier work documented displaced farm families and migrant workers during the Great Depression. The federal government censored many of Lange’s photographs. Yet, her photograph “Childress County, Texas” impacted my life greatly. In this photograph, Lange captures the solitude and poor conditions of this county. Lange uses color and shapes to put across this theme, and she makes the land bigger than the house to emphasize the solitude and emptiness life of the county.

Lange’s use of color helps to put across this theme of the photograph. There is no sunshine for happiness or brightness, no trees for a relaxing shade. Instead, she emphasizes the dissolute of the county with the shades of black, gray and white. The sky is white, the farmer’s shack is black and gray and the farmland is rows of gray soil with no hope of ever producing crop. Lange chooses to make the farmland look lifeless to suggest the despair of the county and anyone who may live in the shack. She could have chosen to have more shacks, but instead, she wanted to show the shack as a gloomy site with no light and no hope.

In landscape art, the artist normally emphasizes the shapes to show the relationship between man and it’s surroundings. While “Childress County, Texas” does have some verticality, it also features horizontal lines and some angles. The photograph

implies that there is only one house in this county or at least the next house is far away and is not in walking distance. The farmer’s shack is in the middle of the photograph, thus showing that it stands along in solitude. The farmer’s shack is surround by crops that have no chance of growing. Lange uses these shapes and angles to show that the county is hopeless.

As I viewed the photograph, I began thinking about an old man. The old man could be married, single, widowed, or divorced. Yet, in my mind I saw an old widowed man. The man was groggy, and lonely. His strength had faded and that was why he couldn’t keep up his crops. I could the old man and how he was probably looking out the window remembering the good days. The days he and his wife lived there with their kids and planted crops for food. He was probably thinking of his old neighbors, who all probably have died off. That’s why the photograph, “Childress County”, impacted my life. It caused me to think and imagine why Lange felt the need to snap the shot of this particular county. Probably, when others view this photograph they may see something else. Which is good because through this one photograph of a lonely shack brought out imagination in everyone’s mind. It caught my attention because it made me wonder about the history behind the photograph.

Dorothea Lange uses color and shapes to put across the theme of the photograph, and she makes the land bigger than the shack to emphasize the solitude life of the county. The colors white, black, and gray capture the despair and poor conditions of the county. Lange’s title shows the meaning or effect she was hoping to capture. She succeeds greatly and impacted my life on the way. After viewing and studying the photograph you

begin to appreciate the photograph and Lange’s thoughts as she snapped the shot. I wonder what real meaning is behind the photo. Can you guess?

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is the most common of the psychoses. About one to two percent of people in Western countries are treated for schizophrenia at some time in their lives, and many additional schizophrenics never receive clinical attention. About half of the inpatients in U.S. mental hospitals are schizophrenics. The syndrome was first described as an intellectual deterioration and symptoms first occur in early adulthood. Then it was later discovered that the disorder is a splitting of psychic functions. Ideas and feelings are isolated from one another; a patient may speak incoherently, for example, or express frightening or sad ideas in a happy manner. Contrary to some popular accounts, schizophrenics do not have a split personality, even though schizophrenia is Greek for split mind. Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness characterized by a variety of symptoms including loss of contact with reality, bizarre behavior, disorganized thinking and speech, decreased emotional expressiveness, and social withdrawal. Usually only some of these symptoms occur in any one person. To observers, schizophrenia may seem like madness or insanity. Schizophrenia has a debilitating effect on the lives of people who suffer from it. A person with schizophrenia may have difficulty telling the difference between real and unreal experiences, logical and illogical thoughts, or appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Schizophrenia seriously impairs a person’s ability to work, go to school, enjoy relationships with others, or care for oneself. In addition, people with schizophrenia frequently require hospitalization because they pose a danger to themselves. About 10 percent of people with schizophrenia commit suicide, and many others attempt suicide. Once people develop schizophrenia, they usually suffer from the illness for the rest of their lives. Although there is no cure, treatment can help many people with schizophrenia lead productive lives. People with schizophrenia account for at least ten percent of the homeless population. Clear consciousness and intellectual capacity are usually maintained, although certain cognitive deficits may evolve in the course of time. Hallucinations, especially auditory, are common and may comment on the individual’s behavior or thoughts. Perception is frequently disturbed in other ways colors or sounds may seem unduly vivid or altered in quality, and irrelevant features of ordinary things may appear more important than the whole object or situation.

There are several symptoms of schizophrenia. Some of these are delusions, hallucinations, thought disorders, loss of boundaries between self and nonself, blunted or inappropriate emotional expression, socially inappropriate behavior, loss of social interests, and deterioration in areas of functioning such as social relations, work, and self-care. The symptoms fluctuate in occurrence and severity. Delusions are false beliefs, usually absurd and bizarre. Thus a patient may believe that he or she is an important historical personality, or is being persecuted by others, or has died, or that a machine controls his or her thoughts. Hallucinations are false sensory experiences. Most schizophrenic hallucinations are auditory, but some are visual or olfactory. The content is often grandiose, hypochondriacal, or religious. Some hallucinatory voices speak of matters related to the patient’s emotional problems or delusional concerns; others transmit apparently irrelevant messages. Schizophrenic thought disorder may include a general lowering of intellectual efficiency, a free-associative rambling from one topic to another, a loss of the distinction between figurative and literal usages of words, reduced ability to think abstractly, invention of new words, and idiosyncratic misuse of common words. Schizophrenia usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood, between the ages of 15 and 0. Social withdrawal is another characteristic of schizophrenia. They may avoid others or act as though others do not exist. Memory problems are another symptom of schizophrenia. Difficulties with memory, attention span, abstract thinking, and planning ahead are related to schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia appears to result not from a single cause, but from a variety of factors. Most scientist believe that schizophrenia is a biological disease caused by genetic factors, an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, structural brain abnormalities, or abnormalities in the prenatal environment. In addition, stressful life events may contribute to the development of schizophrenia in those who are predisposed to the illness. Research suggests that the genes one inherits strongly influence one’s risk of developing schizophrenia. Studies of families have shown that the more closely one is related to someone with schizophrenia, the greater the risk one has of developing the illness. For example, the children of one parent with schizophrenia have about a thirteen- percent chance of developing the illness, and children of two parents with schizophrenia have about a forty-six percent chance of developing schizophrenia. This increased risk occurs even when such children are adopted and raised by mentally healthy parents. In comparison, children in the general population have only about a one- percent chance of developing schizophrenia. Some evidence suggests that schizophrenia may result from an imbalance of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. These chemicals enable neurons to communicate with each other. Some scientists suggest that schizophrenia results from excess activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine in certain parts of the brain or from an abnormal sensitivity to dopamine. Support for this hypothesis comes from antipsychotic drugs, which reduce psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia by blocking brain receptors for dopamine. In addition, amphetamines intensify psychotic symptoms. Brain imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging and positron-emission tomography, have led researchers to discover specific structural abnormalities in the brains of people with schizophrenia. For example, people with chronic schizophrenia tend to have enlarged brain ventricles. Nutrition and influenza can affect prenatally.

There are several types of schizophrenia. The first type of schizophrenia is paranoid schizophrenia. It includes a preoccupation with one or more delusions or frequent auditory hallucinations. None of the following is prominent disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, or flat or inappropriate affect. The second type is catatonic type. This type must have at least two of the following characteristics motoric immobility as evidenced by catalepsy or stupor, excessive motor activity, extreme negativism or mutism, peculiarities of voluntary movements, or echolalia or echopraxia. The third type is disorganized type. Disorganized speech, disorganized behavior, and flat or inappropriate affect are prominent in disorganized schizophrenia. The next type is undifferentiated type. This type has symptoms that are similar to all of the other types. The last type is residual type. Absence of prominent delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior accompanies this type.

Several other psychiatric disorders are closely related to schizophrenia. In schizoaffective disorder, a person shows symptoms of schizophrenia combined with either mania or severe depression. Schizophreniform disorder refers to an illness in which a person experiences schizophrenic symptoms for more than one month but fewer than six months. In schizotypal personality disorder, a person engages in odd thinking, speech, and behavior, but usually does not lose contact with reality. Sometimes mental health professionals refer to these disorders together as schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

Fascist Thought: Re-enchantment or Bigotry?

In its effort to curb the Machiavellian problem, Liberal thought made the modern man morally weaker, a hypocrite and a slave to desire. Indeed this disenchantment of the human race comes with a shift away from the spiritual and an alignment with the desires of the body, and the worldly. The modern day consumer-driven society is geared towards making life easier, more pleasant- and more base. The liberal system is characterized by its moral values, which aim to drive men by fear fear of conflict, fear of violent death- the liberal man is driven by passions and ruled by fear. Nietzsche argues that this weak liberal man is disenchanted and reintroduces the language of the soul- along with which comes that which is spiritual and noble, which he believes will re-enchant our degenerating race. Fascist thought does, to a large extent re-enchant man, restoring respect, and re-injecting value in the individual. However, its noble nature spills over into elitism with a hint of racism and more than just a pinch of violence. While fascist thought does inspire man to a level seemingly higher level than that of today, the values that it holds at its core, reeks of personal prejudice and condemns it to just a passing phase in the history of man. In this essay I will discuss the key values in fascist thought, how it inspires; and how these very values cause the very mention of fascism to be tinged with cruelty, murder, suffering and disaster.

Nietzsche puts forward that modern day morality is that of ‘herd instinct’ (Nietzsche, p10). The modern man has had his instinct to lead, to explore new ground cut off, by this ‘formal conscience’ (Nietzsche, p10), which commands man and tells him what he should or should not do. Modesty, submission, and conformity are but some of the celebrated traits of the herd morality, and man’s long subjection to this system has weakened him, and like a long-time captive animal, he carries with him a broken spirit. He has become but a follower of orders, afraid to step out into uncharted waters. This fear is like a cloud that hangs over the human race, stunting the spiritual growth of man, preventing progress

“The strange narrowness of human evolution, its hesitations, its delays, its frequent retrogressions and rotations, are due to the fact that the herd instinct of obedience has been inherited best and at the expense of the art of commanding.” (Nietzsche, p10)

The qualities that are glorified in the herd morality lead the herd man down the path of the tame, the peaceable, and those that pity; qualities which make him fear- fear change, fear pain, fear violent suffering. Herd morality is dedicated to the satisfaction of bodily desires, with the degradation of man’s supreme faculty serving all his other lowly ones. The modern man is ‘dissatisfied with himself that is certain’ (Nietzsche, p151).

Nietzsche mocks this fear of suffering, claiming that it is suffering, ‘great suffering … alone which has created every elevation of mankind hitherto’ (Nietzsche, p155). He wants to replace this herd with a warrior culture, that which celebrates noble suffering and violence. Suffering educates the spirit and strengthens the soul- fasting and the deprivation of the body’s physical desires elevates man from his base self, but only in war can one see the best and the worst of man. Life is a struggle, and in war there can be noble self-sacrifice- one either succeeds and is bathed in glory or is remembered in failure. While it can be argued that war can be noble, and that it does bring out the best in men; it gives one a reason to live- the nation. Before the concept of the nation can be discussed, the realities of war must be made clear. War is not just suffering, it is brutality, whole cities are destroyed, and innocent non-combatants, women and children are massacred. If one knew the reality of war one would not, in the words of one Wilfred Owen,

“…tell with such high zest/ To children ardent for some desperate glory,/ The old Lie Dulce et decorum est/ Pro patria mori” (Owen, 11)

The nature of war has not changed since the First World War, it did not change when Fascist countries took to the battlefield, and still has not changed today. In actuality of modern times, there is less suffering on the part of the so-called noble combatants, and more damage to innocents; with missiles, bombs and other technologically advanced weapons doing the damage from a safe distance. True, there may be value in ‘making oneself suffer’ (Nietzsche, p15), but one cannot help but wonder how it can be considered noble to suffer and die if one was not even fighting to begin with.

Unity is an important concept in fascist thought. Unity presupposes the concept of ‘us’ and ‘them,’ but Nietzsche takes this a step further, bordering on racism, he says ‘society should not exist for the sake of society but only as a foundation and scaffolding upon which a select species of being is able to raise itself to its higher task’ (Nietzsche, p1). The noble species, is the select species, and the noble man knows ‘himself to be the determiner of values, he does not need to be approved of’ (Nietzsche, p15). This has a tinge of bigotry, and is clearly manifested in the reign of one of the most recognizable fascist leaders- Adolf Hitler. His assertion of the Aryan race as the most pure and the Jews as ‘culture destroyers’ was brutally enforced, with the massacre of millions of Jewish men women and children. While unity can make a people stronger, it comes with definite negative side effects, that when combined with the celebration of suffering and violence produces a deadly cocktail of death and destruction.

Fascist thought should not be denied its worth, it does give man a better reason to live- for the nation, rather than for the petty pursuits of consumer life; it does give the individual more respect than is accorded by the capitalist system, it brings back spirituality and with it a certain ethics; but in manifesting fascist thought, the Germans committed genocide, and were guilty of war crimes. The fascist quest for the noble is highly commendable, it does rescue man from the doldrums of petty consumerism and gives value to life- a re-enchantment definitely; but along with the nobility comes the inevitable dose of bigotry. With vocabulary such as ‘the noble caste,’’ a select species,’ and ‘exploitation…as a reality it is the primordial fact of all history,’ one just needs to add this bigotry to the celebration of violence and suffering to see its disastrous effects not only on a particular race, but on the world. What cannot be denied is that the soul language of the fascists does bring us back to the machiavellian problem, which is precisely the side-effect of fascist nobility- the exploitation of man and his ‘spirituality’ for glory of the nation (read political power). The Fight Club captures fascist behaviour rather well true, in fascism, ‘you are not the contents of your wallet,’ but you love death more than they love life- you are a danger to the world because you think you are right, you think you are the best, and you think you may act as you wish, or as ‘the heart dictates, and in any case beyond good and evil.’ (Nietzsche, p16)

Websters dictionary defines relationships as an emotional and especially sexual, attachment between two people. However anyone in a relationship will undoubtedly pronounce that the word has a significance far greater than that is defined by any dictionary. The complication arises when a relationship becomes abusive, and a profound amount of times it is the woman who is being victimized. Whether the victimization is physical, sexual, mental, emotional or even economical, many women choose to remain in these abusive relationships. It is often baffling as to why these individuals would remain in such a disastrous alliance, however many are bound by obligations such as culture, children, fear of loneliness and even financial insecurities.

The expectations predetermined by certain cultures upon women are the primary reasons for their perseverance in unhappy relationships. Almost every religion and culture reinforces the ideology that women are inferior to men both intellectually and physically. In many cultures it is a taboo if one ends a martial affair for any reason whatsoever, and the woman is always the one condemned. A specific South Indian society of Tamils is one of such beliefs. Here the womans roles as a wife are so clearly defined, (passiveness, stay at home, cook, clean, take care of the children and yield to all of the husbands demands), that any deviation from that patriarchal code of behavior will be seen as rebellious, and the woman will be banished. These outlooks come from tradition, beliefs and customs that are passed on through generations. Even if the husband is an unquestionably abusive man--physically, mentally, or even sexually, the wife is expected to bear with him until his dying day. When that day does arrive and the husband is cremated as their religion requires, the screaming wife is thrown into the scorching fire (almost always against her will), and burned alive. It is believed that they will rejoin in the after life and continue with their lives as they had done so on Earth. Remarkably, this ritual is still practiced in some remote villages.

Women in Western societies are usually not bound by such ludicrous, cultural obligations. Many times the woman chooses to remain in the abusive relationship because of her children. She fears that if she were to leave her husband she will loose custody of the children, without whom life to her is worthless. The woman may also be under the pressure that if she were to leave the children with the husband, they may not be cared for properly, the sense of family will be lost and her children will grow up without the loving influence of a mother. However, if she were to take the children with her, she may fear that her financial resources would not be adequate to provide for the needs of her growing children.

The fear of financial instability is what persuades some women to stay in abusive relationships. They fear that if they were to leave, they would not have sufficient funding to support themselves, let alone their children. They would have to start life from scratch, buy everything new, pay rent, get food, and worry about the many other unforeseen costs that may arise. Even if she were to stay with family and friends, the stay would have to be temporary, for not too many people are fond of housing a renegade housewife for extended periods of time. However, even if the financial uncertainty is resolved, few women, especially those coming out of an abusive relationship, have enough self-confidence to, find a new partner and begin a new relationship.

Hence it is this fear of loneliness that influences certain women to suffer through an uncanny union. Will I find another man at such an age? With such a past? Who would want a single mother? Was all this my fault? What if it happens all over again? These are all worries that are often blown out of proportion by women leaving abusive relationships. Their self confidence and morale are low--they may be exiled by society, separated from their children, with no or little money, no stable place to stay, and now they will be lonely. Is it all worth it? Unfortunately, many women think that it is not, and after weighing out all the possible options, they conclude that this abusive relationship is tolerable considering the other alternatives.

Even though to us, from the outside world it may seem that a woman is being absurd for remaining in an obviously abusive relationship, for her there are many factors governing her decision. The cultural ramifications, the possible loss of her children, or what may become of them without her, the financial insecurity, and even the uncertainty of being lonely are all questions that a woman must ponder before she leaves the abusive relationship and enter yet an already patriarchal society. Hence it is not surprising to see many women endure the pains and suffering, and remain in these relationships, clinging to the hope that one day all her suffering will end, and that she can live the happy and perfect life that she had envisioned prior to their marriage.

The conflict between imagination and expectation - Anne is guided by her imagination and romanticism-which often leads her socially astray. Reveries and daydreams constantly interrupt her chores and conversations, pulling her away from reality into her own imaginary world. As wonderful as this escape is for Anne, her rich inner life often comes into conflict with the real world of Avonlea. This conflict is played out in her relationship with Marilla, who, before Annes arrival never indulged in fantasy and equated goodness with decorum and being sensible. Marilla embodies the social rigidity that guides well behaved ladies. While most girls, like Diana, strive to please adults by acting obedient and deferential, Anne finds more pleasure in her wild fantasies than in conforming to social expectations. But as she matures, Annes extreme romanticism is curbed, and she finds a compromise between imagination and social respectability.

Sentimentality versus emotion - Annes feelings run deep; she loves and hates with passion, and she dreams with the utmost spirit. But she cannot distinguish between true emotion and mere sentimentality, often allowing herself to indulge in sentiment because she thinks it is romantic. Her fictional stories with their melodramatic plots of true love, eternal devotion, and tragic loss, manifest her weakness for sentimentality. She and her friends allow themselves to be swept up in such dreaminess-even enjoying their weepy farewell to Mr. Phillips, whom they hated.

Such indulgence, Montgomery suggests, is natural to the pre-teen female disposition, and tends to fade during early adulthood. Annes rite of passage into the adult world is Matthews death at the end of the novel, which is her first experience of true loss. Having mistaken sentimentality for true emotion as a child, she is surprised by her reaction to loss, and she learns about how to deal with emotion in the real world.

Motifs

Fashion - Annes interest in fashion is not borne simply of a desire to look pretty, although looking pretty is rarely far from her mind. Her claim that it would be easier to be good if she were well dressed and beautiful reveals that in her mind that fashion overlaps with morality. She also says that she would be a more grateful person if she were happy with her looks-but since she is homely, she cannot appreciate God. Her quest to find beauty will ultimately be rewarding, when, as an adult, she becomes a source of beauty herself rather than simply an appreciator of it.

Anne also views fashion as a means of fitting in and finding an identity group. When she arrives, she wears the ugly skimpy clothes from the orphanage, which represent her status as a solitary, lonely person. At Green Gables, Marilla initially forces her to wear sensible clothes completely devoid of frills or beauty. But a year or two, Matthew buys Anne her first puffed sleeve dress and Marilla thereafter consents to dress her in the latest fashions. These three steps from the orphanage clothes to sensible frocks to the party dresses she wears at Queens represent the stages Anne goes through from her initial position as an outcast to her eventual place of social and academic prominence.

Images of nature - Annes imagination immediately reveals itself during her first ride to Green Gables when she waxes romantic about the beautiful trees and natural sights of Avonlea. Nature is not only a source of beauty but has also come to represent companionship and reliability for Anne. She finds friends in plants and playmates in brooks. As she matures, she continues to love nature, which, during the stressful exam period at Queens gives her perspective about what is truly important in life. At the end of the book, she looks to nature as a metaphor for her future, full of beauty, promise and mystery.

Today I would like to talk about the issue of globalization here. I had seen an article from “The Economists” September 0th 00. The article talks about the global airline consolidation. In the article, it reported that Air France and KLM confirmed their alliance on September 17th. After this, shares of KLM have been going up. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the biggest flight company in Netherlands. It will join the global SkyTeam alliance of airlines, based around Air France and America’s Delta Air Lines. Then Air France has also recruited Alitalia to the SkyTeam group, it will now compete with the other two global alliances in terms of traffic, they are Star (Lufthansa, United Airlines, Singapore) and oneworld (which includes British Airways, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific). As we can see, global consolidation can bring many benefits, such as strengthening the competitiveness. Although there are many critical points, we still have to admit that globalization is really a big issue in recent years, especially in business area.

Relation with my current learning

Globalization is popularly described as the absence of borders and barriers to trade between nations. A business leader who believes national borderlessness is the essence of globalization will guide organisational energy toward monitoring national and foreign economic change.

My current learning is a general subject of the business. I have to take many courses within the business area, such as accounting, organisation behaviour, economics, management, finance, marketing, and so on. As globalization does affect much on business, which includes those fields of marketing, management, finance, accounting and economics. Therefore, it has a close relation to my learning. When I study business studies, I can not only learn the pure theory or skills for doing the business, I also have to be aware of the business environment under the way of globalization. For example, I have to know how to manage with foreign people for management; what the exchange rate is of the other countries’ currency for finance, how many foreign companies compete in this market for marketing, because globalization results in international business. So it really relates to my learning a lot. We even had the course of international business environment last year.

Development of Cinema from 1890-1930

In the late nineteenth century there were many ways for the general public to see far off lands, exotic animals and things of that nature, but the only problem was it was rare that anyone would get a chance to see these objects live and in action. There were lantern slide which could provide a person with the chance to see some of these places or things, but the slides only showed a static picture. On the other hand there were events such as circuses and traveling performance groups which also were another way to witness some out of the ordinary spectacles first hand but these performances were few and far between due to the cost of travel. So like many other forms of entertainment at that time many things were only made available to the higher class and working class and middle class people were forced to stay within their folk culture.

Enter the invention of cinema. Cinema was to be the solution to all these for mentioned problems with entertainment of the nineteenth century. It would create a media that would be, not only revolutionary, but affordable for all classes to enjoy together.

Cinema, short for cinematography, is defined as the art, science, and work of photography in creating films (Agnes 65). And film is defined as a sequence of photographs or drawings projected onto a screen in such rapid succession that they create the optical illusion of moving pictures and objects (Agnes 5). With cinema it would be possible to bring all of the distant lands and things in those places to life right in front of any individual anywhere in the world. Plays and performances could be recorded as well so an individual could watch it many months and thousands of mile later. The invention of cinema would create an entire different entertainment that would be accessible to all people, no matter where they lived, their class or race. Cinema would be an invention for the people.

Cinema was not invented overnight, and just the same it would take many years and many people to develop this art form. From the crude stages of cinema to developing classical Hollywood cinema there were thousands upon thousands of trials and errors. But all of these mistakes were made for a purpose and there all important in understanding how cinema got to where it is today.

At the very beginning cinema was far form what we think of today when we talk about movies and the classical Hollywood styles. Early cinema, or the “primitive period” as referred to by many historians, consists of all of the exhibitions which took place between 184 until sometime around 108. The first films were mostly non-fiction films consisting of scenes of far off places and topicals featuring news briefs. At this point in film narratives were almost non-existent. Because cinema was such a complex idea for the general public to grasp in itself, it was not necessary for the early films to consist of anything but the moving pictures themselves. The public would line-up at a chance to see one minute of a person on film just doing everyday activities such as swimming or animals from distant lands. As long as the pictures were in motion that was enough to keep the audiences happy. This, of course, would not last long. Before long the novelty of moving pictures wore off and it was time for film makers to start developing a style or system for this new invention.

The primitive period of cinema can be broken up into two major phases. The first of these two phases lasted from 185 to about 10. This first phase can be considered the more primitive of the two. During this earlier phase the major influence in the way cinema was created was the fact that film makers thought of their audiences as the same as the audiences of theater at that time. From the way the scenes were staged down to the way the actors played to the camera, everything was mimicked after the way the staged shows were set-up. Most scenes were staged so that the audience would be looking into the scene rather than many of today’s films in which we, as the audience, are put on the “edge” of the action and feel like part of the scene. As far as the narrative goes, many of these films did have stories, but due to the fact that sound was not yet present in cinema and film makers had not developed ways to guide the audience through the narrative it was easy for the story to get lost along the way. Films at this point, for the most part, one-shot scenes. Some used a few of theses one-shot scenes but devices such as cross-cutting, dissolves and other things of that nature were not in use as of yet.

At this point it was evident that it was time to take new and bigger steps. With this second stage elements of film such as causally linked events, increased lengths, and complex production methods would come into effect. A good example of film at this time is Edwin S. Porter’s film The Life of an American Fireman. In this film audiences saw the first elements of the “chase film”which became one of the most popular genres in narrative film from 10 to 104. The chase films, instead of relying on one brief scene of action, would stretch out the action over series of scenes. This was a sign of where film would be going as far as carrying a narrative through a film although the film still relied on one initial action taking place at the beginning of each film. Around this same time is when the cinema was becoming even more popular and the demand was so great that film makers began to increase the lengths of their films to satisfy the demand. Because of the increase in volume many film makers began the mass production of staged narratives and this of course put the narrative aspect of cinema into the spotlight. This is where we see the major shift from primitive cinema into classical cinema.

The period in which the classical model emerged was started around 108/10. The largest contributing factor to all of the changes to come in cinema can be attributed to the demand in which the public placed on film makes for more product. Not only did this motivate the film makers to increase the lengths of films and start staging more narrative films. But the increase in length inadvertently created some much-needed space for the classical model to grow. The increase in length obviously required the film makers to fill all this new space with something. This increase in length had two separate areas of impact on cinema. One was the fact that film makers began experimenting more with multiple shots. This lead to dealing with cutting and solving problems with cutting. The other major impact that the increased length made was on the narrative. More film meant for time for characters and stories to develop. The idea for developing characters created possibilities such as revealing a characters mental state to the audience. Just like primitive film modeled itself after vaudeville and theater in general, the narrative in the classical model would model itself after the popular arts of it’s time. The most significant of these art forms were short stories and novels. Writers like Edgar Allan Poe influenced film makers by providing a model for the psychology of characters.

As well as the advances in shooting styles and character development there were several other great advances made while the classical model was built. Thompson says, “The classical narrative settled into a pattern of linear causality with multiple lines of intertwined actions.” In conjunction with the multiple lines of action came the most important idea related to cinema since it’s conception. Path’ Freres said of this new concept, “Let one scene lead into th next scene wherever possible. Motion picture theater goers don’t yearn for mental gymnastics and shouldn’t be kept guessing as to who the characters are or why that are in the story at all...Keep your scenes in a sequence easily followed by the onlooker”. This idea that Freres describes in this quote is continuity. Continuity stands for the smoothly flowing narrative, with its technique constantly in the service of the causal chain Bordwell 4).

Along with this idea of continuity in cinema came other linked developments that had a huge impact on the outcome of the classical model. The idea of involving continuity in scripts as well as the editing process made the whole concept of continuity easier. Now the events would be linked from the very beginning, even before the film was shot and edited.

Beside the multiple lines of action starting to take place there was also the use of inter-titles. Inter-titles were a tool used by film makers to help move the narrative along and to make it easier for the audience to follow the action. Inter-title were, at first, used primarily in the beginning of scenes to setup the action that was about to take place. But as the film makers began to experiment more with all of their new tools they found that it was easy to create dialogue throughout their films by using inter-titles as the dialogue. This was a huge development considering sound had still yet to be brought into the “picture”.

At this point the classical model had really taken shape, but there were some very important aspects of this period that still had a huge impact on the model. One of these final steps in building the model was the development of acting styles. To be more specific it was the development of the American acting styles that made a big impact.

Acting was always considered a very “strange” part of the cinema. It seemed as if audiences never felt comfortable with the way action and emotions were portrayed by the pantomiming actors of the primitive and early classical periods. But with the development of the classical model came a new breed of actors who abandoned the traditional pantomiming style and started focusing more on restrained gestures and facial expressions. Along with this new way of acting on screen came another new development in cinema. Because the American style called for smaller, less exaggerated movements and focused more on facial expressions film makers had to start using closer framings. These shots are not what we would call close-ups today, but at that time there were only long shots and close shots. The new framings enabled the audience to get a closer look at the actors faces and their expressions. This new technique did not go without criticism though. Many critiques believed that by cutting off actors at the knees that it was breaking many of the principles of the traditional aesthetic. H.F. Hoffman said of this new development, “The difference between the two schools is broad and plain. The European school is based more on bodily movements than upon the mobility of the face. The American school relies more upon the expression of the face and the suppression of bodily movement.”

Because audiences were now able to see the actors faces more clearly it gave film makers the opportunity to create stars. The star shot was created in order to spotlight certain actors of the time. This is really the first time in which audiences were given a chance to become familiar with some of the actors and this is obviously where the entire aspect fo movie stars began, which is a big part of the film industry today.

One aspect of cinema that can be gathered form all of the developments described thus far is the creative motivation produced by money. Although all art forms are sold or exchanged for some monetary value it seems that cinema allowed the business side to take over the creative control and decide what should and should not be changed in the creation of the classical model. So rather than cinema becoming a classical art form like painting, it became a product of commercialism.

The cinema has obviously come a long way since the early days of single-shot films and over-exaggerating actors(although there are still some of those actors around today). Cinema is still changing everyday and continues to make a major impact on society and the way we look at current events, religion, politics, sex, drugs, death and so many other parts of our lives.
