A World Unknown (My Trip to Europe)
Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed about traveling overseas. Strange lands, exciting places, and new cultures have always fascinated me. Ive always wondered what it would be like to speak another language, to grow up learning different customs, or to live in a completely different way than I do now. Three years back my dream finally came true. I got to travel to England, France, Switzerland, and Germany with my family and suddenly the world was at my fingertips.
Englands green hills and city life is unforgettable. Kensington, Westminster Abby, and Piccadilly Circus are just a few parts of London full of historic cathedrals, quaint little cafes, and amazing shopping places. Harrods, where the royal family shops, supposedly sells everything. Its loveliness attracts thousands of tourists, which include foreigners as well. My favorite experience in London was riding The Underground to see the Broadway play Fosse and watching the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace. England overall is much different from the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). The language spoken in England is English, whereas the official language spoken in the U.A.E. is Arabic, but they also speak English. Also, the currency in England, the Pound, is quite high compared to the U.A.E. Dirhams. However, driving on the left side of the road is hard to get use to.
The Eiffel Tower, The Arc de Triomphe, The Lourve, The obelisk, La Place de la Concorde, and Notre Dame are all located in the heart of Paris, France. Paris, with its French cuisine, romantic atmosphere and historical self-being fills you with a sense of complete contentment. Ill never forget sitting at a French cafe, eating a baguette, drinking mineral water, and watching the Parisians walk by. Pariss metro system makes going anywhere a fast and easy trip. With my knowledge of the French language and an idea about French life I came to love Paris.
Theres only one word to describe Switzerland and Germany, and thats beautiful. Quite the contrary to what I expected, both countries turned out to be extremely clean. There are not as many tourist attractions but the scenery alone is enough to keep you engaged. In Lucerne, Switzerland I went up Mt. Pilatus, tasted fine Swiss chocolate, browsed the famous coo-coo clocks, and even got to attend a folk dinner. At the dinner, I ate and drank while people serenaded us singing, dancing, and playing Swiss folk instruments. My family and I didnt spend very much time in Germany, but we managed the time we did have well. Some of my fondest memories there were eating what Germany happens to be known for; its sauerkraut and sausage, visiting Reims castle, and going to the Heidelburg disco tech (a nightclub type place).
After the fabulous days touring the four countries it was time to return to the U.A.E. I had made so many new friends, saw so many new things, and had so much fun and enjoyment of the essence. Going to Europe completely changed the way I looked at the world. I now respect different cultures. I never imagined how different the world outside my own in the U.A.E. really was. My adventure has left me wondering what the rest of the world is like. The active life of traveling in Europe filled me with a zest for life. Theres so much Ive never seen. Its a great big world and I cant wait to explore it.

Tattoos
Every day you see people walking down the street with tattoos. These people are often stereotyped as being “bad asses” but why? Tattoos are not always worn by rough crowds nor do they make people tough. So why is it that a majority of the population looks down on them and feels that they are wrong? They are merely a form of art; no different than someone who enjoys certain paintings on their walls except that hey are permanently hung on the person who buys them. Most people with tattoos do not just go out and get them for the hell of it or because of the image that it can give them; it is a thought out process of elimination to find the perfect piece. There are hundreds of thousands of different pieces to choose from.Just the other day I was in line at subway ordering a sandwich when a man needed to get in front of me. I heard someone from the back line say “just go up to front of the line” then the man said “I don’t want to get beat up”. Instantly I knew that he was talking about me because I had a tank top on and I have tattoos all over my arms. This made me feel uncomfortable because I could not understand why someone would think that about me. Just because a person has tattoos it does not mean that they are a bad person who wants to fight with everyone. Many times I have encountered people judging me before they know me. From personal experience I have found that some people think of the hells angels or some other type of gang when they see people like me. Tattoos are a reflection of someone’s personality but it is unusual to meet someone who understands why. Only the person who wears the tattoo can fully understand why they got it. I have also come across people who think that tattoos are unsanitary there for they feel that the people who have them are unsanitary. This is a big misconception. There are rules and regulations for tattooing just like anything else in this world. Everything that is involved in the procedure must be sanitary and sterile. The needles used for the actual tattooing are cut and thrown away after the tattoo is preformed. Part of the reason for people thinking this is because when you walk into t tattoo parlor there are all kinds of weird art covering the wall, from freaky to perverted to cute. One might be overwhelmed by all the pictures and not know what to think which in turn could easily give them a bad name.Tattooing is an ancient art that has been around for a long time it has evolved just like anything else and because of this certain people disrespect it. It is just a personal preference and a way to show ones personal thoughts. Tattoos do not make people mean and they are not an implication that someone has a bad personality.

The purpose of human life is an unanswerable question. It seems impossible to find an answer because we dont know where to start looking. To us, existence seems to be something imposed on us by an unknown force. There seems to be no reason for it, therefore making the world seem choatic. For this reason, society tries to make meaning of it by materialistic purposes to distract us from the fact that it is actually a hopless and mysterious predicament. Samuel Becketts two act play, Waiting For Godot, captures this feeling and view of the world.
This viewpoint is shown by the difference between Pozzo and Lucky in both Act I and II. Since this world is soley based on chance, human lives are treated in an almost cruel manner. In act one, Pozzo is traveling to the market to sell Lucky. Pozzo is totally healthy. Lucky is a perfectly normal slave who has started to annoy Pozzo, so he is going to be sold. This is the first way Valdimir and Estrogen see this odd couple. However, the next day Pozzo and Luckys predicament have changed. Pozzo is blind and Lucky has become a mute. When Valdimir and Estrogen confront them on these drastic hcanges, Pozzos answers are confused. He has absolutely no recollection of the day before when he ordered Lucky to think and claims Lucky has always been a mute. When Valdimir asks him when he became blind, Pozzo responds, I woke up one find day as blind as fortune. When Valdimir asks him for details, Pozzo answers violently, Dont question me! The blind have no notion of time. The things of time are hidden from them too!

Dead Men’s Path
We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Dead Men’s Path even at the eleventh hour. Shakespeare once wrote, “The common curse of mankind, --folly and ignorance” (Tro. .; Shakespeare). In “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson uses symbolism to point out the folly and ignorance associated with mankind’s ability to justify their actions with superstition and tradition. “The Lottery” is a short story that without the symbolism of its characters would amount to little more than an odd tale about a stoning. The setting is an almost festive day in the town square. Jackson describes the children bursting “into boisterous play, and their talk still of the classroom” (78). Yet beneath the normality of the setting there is an undertone of reservation. For example, she describes the men standing around telling jokes yet she states that “their jokes were quiet and they smiled rather than laughed” (78).
One of the leaders and most important men of the town is Mr. Summers, who runs the lottery and other civic events. Summer is the season of growing, the season of life. Mr. Summers’ name may symbolize life but instead of awarding life to the winner of the lottery he sentences death. Mr. Graves is the man who carries the black box and swears in Mr. Summers to make the lottery official. The symbolism in his name is quite apparent; by bringing the black box he is equivocally digging someone’s grave. Old man Warner, as his name indicates warns the crowd of the danger involved in breaking tradition. Tessie Hutchinson’s name reminds one of the historical name, Anne Hutchison. Anne Hutchison was a Puritan who became a willing martyr for her religious beliefs and was ran out of her small community. The irony in using the name Hutchison is that although Tessie Hutchinson at first appears to be a light-hearted and good-natured person that believes in the lottery, once her family name is chosen she fears only for herself. Instead of protecting her family and standing up for her beliefs, she tries to lower her own odds of being chosen by insisting that her married daughter also be included in the second drawing. Bill Hutchinson also foregoes any attempt to protect his family by forcing his wife to show her piece of paper and unquestioningly accepts his wife’s fate.
Jackson shows that the lottery has become a meaningless dog that the townspeople ignorantly follow driven only by their own sickness. The symbolism of the characters, especially that of Tessie Hutchinson provides considerable information on the theme of the story. Tessie Hutchinson is the perfect example of how evil exists in everyone. When people are brought together by fear and tradition and led with ignorance and folly there is sure to be terrible consequence.

Throughout history, there has always been a struggle between owners of the capital and workforce and, to a greater extent, between types of economies. There are three main ways in which an economy is supposed to work demand economy, command economy and intervention economy. However, effective or ineffective as they may be, all these economies have their flaws.
First of all, the demand economy, also known as the market economy, is based on a fairly easy concept independent producers compete to satisfy consumer demands. There are no “patterns” but there is an “invisible mechanism” which assures everyone’s satisfaction. Producers prosper provided the consumers are pleased, and, at least in theory, everybody is happy. However, problems appear when the demand and the supply are not equal. For example, when the supply exceeds the demand, prices and profits tend to fall, producers lay off workers in hope for lower costs, but people are then unemployed and cannot afford to buy what is out on the market. It is all boom and bust, and solutions are often short-term ones and rarely easy.
The left response is to demand state intervention to keep things from going bad; the right response is to soften the rigours of competition by contriving monopolies. Both responses are, in effect, leanings towards the command economy - the plan it all and control it all economy.
Secondly, the command economy, which Romanians had the good opportunity to experience themselves, rests upon a small group of witty minds pulling all the strings. In fact, this type of economy is based on Marx’s idea “from each according to his ability, to each according A collective force working towards a common to his need”. goal, following long-term plans conceived by the best experts- this was the receipt for success. Unfortunately, this type of economy proved out to be the most disastrous. Some say that in an almost perfect country with almost perfect citizens it would have worked, but no one is really perfect and, what the economy did was destroy individual initiative. Furthermore, this economy was used mostly to offer a carefree life to its commanders, who were either mediocrities or absolute tyrants, who acted upon the saying that “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Moreover, the command economy markets failed to offer a wide range of products and needs were rarely satisfied. As Nicholas Goodhart once noticed, to create a control is to create and incentive to evade it, and soon enough, black markets sprung out.
Another disadvantage of these regimes was waste of resources. A planned economy needs to divert resources into planning, rather than actually producing. The number of population employed was more than the number the productions really need if they improve their technology. Another problem is the over-regulation and inflexibility. An complex and intricate plan of this detail could not be easily adjusted to take account of changing circumstances, and could not easily find outlets for initiative and ingenuity. The Soviet Union contrived to keep a planning regime for more than 70 years, but latterly they were failing to meet increasingly modest targets.
Then, there is the Keynesian Intervention economy, the economy that is based on the state manipulation of demand economy. Public money is often used to ameliorate the busts. The worst effects of negative phenomena, such as unemployment and inflation are dealt with by the state. The poor are supported through welfare and public investments are stimulated. However, the disadvantage of this type of economy is its tendency towards command economy. It is not always that public decisions are the best and some producers complain about not being allowed to take all the decisions they want.
Party-politically speaking, the command economy is identified with defunct Stalinism, the demand economy is identified with political conservatism (sometimes called economic liberalism or Thatcherism); the state-managed market economy, meant to make the best of both worlds, is associated with the centre-left in politics. Two great deceased card-carrying Liberals are associated with this centre-left trend - Beveridge and Keynes - who towered over The British Economic Way of Life for most of the post-war years while their party had hardly any seats in the Commons.
To conclude with, no economy is a guaranteed path for a country’s prosperity. The fact that some countries are wealthier than others rests upon the way the governments mix the “ingredients” of all these types of economies, as well as upon the general mentality.

Corporate governance is concerned with holding the balance between economic and social goals and between individual and communal goals_. The aim is to align, as nearly as possible, the interest of the individuals, corporations and society
Sir Adrian Cadbury 1
The UK’s economy depends on the drive and efficiency of its companies. The companies must be free to drive forward, but exercise that freedom of situating a system of effective accountability. This is the essence of any system of good ‘Corporate Governance’.
Corporate Governance is the system by which companies are directed and controlled. Board of Directors are responsible for the governance of their companies. The shareholders’ role in governance is to appoint governance structure is in place.
In 1, Sir Adrian and his committee introduced a report outlining the need for better corporate governance. This was the response to a number of scandals that occurred in the late 180s and early 10s that had people in doubt on the ways companies were run. This resulted in scandalous collapse of UK companies such as Pollypeck International PLC, Bank Of Credit and Commerce International (a.k.a BCCI) and Maxwell Communication Corporation. The reasons for these failures were due to weak governance systems, lax board oversight, and the authority of control in the hands of a single top executive. The Financial Times (May 8, 1) mentioned, “The downfall of powerful figures such as Asil Nadir or the late Robert Maxwell (who was accused of stealing £700 million from employee pension funds to support his failing publishing company, the Mirror Group), whose personal control over their companies raised fears about the concentration power”. However, collapse of UK companies was not the only reason on why there was a demand for better corporate governance, another reason is that in publicly-traded UK corporations, the positions of the ‘Chairman’ and ‘Chief Executive’ were held by one person which doesn’t enhance a broad oversight of the company. An example of this was printed in the Financial Times in 188 where it stated, “For 4 of the Fortune 500 companies and for 8 of the FTSE 500 companies, a single individual jointly held the positions of Chairman and CEO.” This was a concern to many companies after the downfall of some powerful figures (as mentioned earlier). In 11, the Conservative Government Of the United Kingdom met together to “address the financial aspects of corporate governance” (Report of The Committee on The Financial Aspects of Corporate Governance (Section 1.8), December 1). The Conservative Government depends on its country’s economy, the UK has a strong economy and in order to maintain this strength companies need to be more efficient. In May 11 The Cadbury Committee was appointed by the Conservative Government, a year later the Cadbury Report was introduced as a response to drive companies forward in being efficient, keeping The UK’s economy strong and to respond to the scandals that have occurred.
In December 1, the Cadbury Committee published the ‘Code Of Best Practice’, which was directed to all boards of directors of all listed companies registered in the UK. In the code, the committee recommended that boards of publicly-trade UK corporations include at least three outside directors (non-executive directors), the positions of the
chairman and chief executive must not be held by a single individual as they used to be in previous years. The chairmans role is to watch out for the interest of shareholders and prevent
the kind of mischief that brought down Maxwells empire and --hardly possible if the CEO and chairman are the same.
Prosser, a board member at GlaxoSmithKline and BP, says The opportunity to observe such subtleties as body language among executives is much easier when there are more board members present. The Cadbury Report sought to end the rubber-stamp board by making sure that the role of non-executive directors was no longer without care for the chairman’s friends. The key purpose was to limit the power of business leader such as Robert Maxwell who might press his board into disastrous situations. Since 1, directors in the UK have access to all top managers. This may sound of little value, but it can provide early warning signs. Prosser, a board member at GlaxoSmithKline and BP, says “The opportunity to observe such subtleties as body language among executives is much easier when there are more board members present.” The Cadbury report also spelled out Britains preference for an accounting system based on true and fair disclosure--telling investors what they need to know rather than merely meeting a legal checklist. However, the success of the Cadbury Report and other reports doesn’t mean that there weren’t any disadvantages because Corporate Governance is never going to be perfect. In January 15, a survey by Pensions Investment Research Consultants (PIRC) found that 5% of the top 10 companies do not fully comply with the Cadbury Code in key areas such as the composition of the audit committee, independence among the non-executive directors and the separation of powers between the chairman and chief executive. The Cadbury Code didn’t prevent the collapse of Barings in 15 and it can’t stop a boss from committing outright fraud. Cadbury himself admitted that his panel’s work “might not have stopped Maxwell from being Maxwell, but it would certainly have brought it to the public attention sooner.”
The introduction of the Cadbury Report in 1 was a step in making corporate governance better but it should have been introduced earlier, to try and prevent the scandals that happened. The way forward now for trying to make corporate governance even better is to say what the punishment is if one is found guilty of fraud, this point was not mentioned in the Cadbury Code but only stated that there would be serious consequences if one was found guilty. Any companies that do not fully comply with the Cadbury Code must be punished, e.g. 5% of the top 10 companies did not comply with the Cadbury Code those companies must be punished otherwise if no action is taken place then the rest of the companies might do the same. Also, more investigation should take place to try and reduce the chances of fraud happening, if so then harsher codes should be introduced. The Financial Times, June , 1 said that “The Committees’ recommendations are steps in the right direction. But if the government is to address the problems, which led to Maxwell, Polly Peck and other recent scandals, then new rules in a legal framework are required…Shareholders, investors and creditors will have been disappointed that just when the corporate failures of recent years cried out for bold and imaginative legal return, the body from which so much had been expected came up with a little, tinkering and a voluntary code”.

Contrast of New England Society Versus the Chesapeake Region

The New England and Chesapeake regions were settled by the English for two completely different reasons, and by people with completely different attitudes towards forming colonies. The New England settlers focused on Puritan values and traditions that they brought with them to the colonies, including their family values, work ethic, and religious influences. On the other hand, the Chesapeake was settled by men looking to ravage the New World for gold and fortune, establishing their colonies strictly for economic reasons.
A large portion of the New England colonies were Puritans. Their beliefs tried to bring together all the colonists into a community, where everyone worked together under God. In Document A, Winthrop discusses how the colony should be run. It is an example of the belief that everyone in the colony should work together and work for each other so that the whole colony can prosper. He claims the colony “shall be as a city upon a hill,” or a religious utopia. Clearly the New England colonies were settled with religion guiding the settlers. In Document B the list of emigrants is greatly dominated by families. The settlers brought their entire family with them on the voyage, which speaks of the value these Puritan settlers had regarding the family. In Document D the agreement is to have the towns be composed of forty families. These families will include the rich and the poor, the New England settlers are of diverse prosperity, yet all working together for the prosperity of the colony as a whole. The same document specifies that “everyone shall have a share of the meadow or planting ground,” another part of the unity of the community. Document E is another testament to this unity; it says that there is to be no oppression on others to “enrich themselves suddenly and inordinately.” No one is in New England to get rich and oppress others; it is a sin according to the document. They are a part of the colony to provide for their families, and work hard to benefit their way of life, as well as their right to practice religion.
The Chesapeake region was settled for entirely separate reasons compared to the New England colonies. We see this immediately as it is mostly young men settling in this region according to Document C. There were very few women, and no trace of any families or relations. Obviously these settlers were not looking for a place to live with their families like the New England settlers. The Chesapeake settlers were looking for money and economic prosperity. In Document F John Smith talks about how gold hungry his crew was. They were only settling to get rich, without concerns of making families, or helping the whole colony prosper. They were in it to take the gold and bring it back to England so they could get rich. Document G has evidence that most of the men that arrived in the Chesapeake were not up to hard work, “whose labor will hardly maintain them.” This is because most of the people that did settle in this region were from the aristocracy in England and not used to working. Unlike New England which stressed hard work, the Chesapeake settlers expected to get rich by merely picking gold off the ground. They had hopes of “bettering their condition by sharing the plunder of the country with them.” In Document H, Bacon attacks the attitude of the Chesapeake Bay settlers. Being of the Piedmont area, Bacon and other farmers were getting the short end of the stick when it came to Virginian wealth. The Tidewater planters were prospering at the expense of the Piedmont farmers. In the document Bacon claims that the Tidewater settlers have “sucked up the public treasure.” It can be noted that he says “public” treasure, referring to the idea that the wealth of Virginia should belong to all the colonists, and not just a few. The New England colonists gained their wealth by working together as a whole, while in the Chesapeake a few colonists got wealthy while others got shafted. It was more of a struggle for individual prospects rather than community prosperity. This was the major difference between the two regions.
The difference in societies was clearly due to the different attitudes the colonists possessed towards the settlements they formed. The New England colonies were a community of religious followers who had high regard for civil institutions as well as religious beliefs, while the Chesapeake colonists were in contrast driven by economics and individual concerns. These conflicting attitudes led to the evolution of colonies whose societies were bound within regional borders.

In the poem ?Beowulf? the main character Beowulf holds many qualities of an epic hero. There are many different qualities of an epic hero. An epic hero must have superhuman powers, represante a group, only killed if to preserve a society, true to his word, endure fame, show skill and courage, obstacles that are overcome (). These are all stong qualities that Beowulf obtains that there for makes him an ideal epic hero. As the poet describes him ?Of living men he was the strongest, Fearless and gallant and great of heart? media bias
We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like media bias even at the eleventh hour. Living a daily existence in this day and age is at the least, a process which can only be expressed as time-consuming. I am a full time student, and have a full time job. Sometimes I fit grocery shopping, house chores, and visiting with family and friends as well into my daily routine. So what is my point¡K? I believe that I am a product of a generation that is only satisfied by the quick fix. So while being invested in the requirements of living my own existence, I rely on the source of news media to keep myself updated on global events. Typically, I might turn into ¡§KYW News Radio 1060,¡¨ if I am conveniently in my car. While lying in bed, I might also catch an episode of ¡§60 minutes¡¨ while flipping back and forth to the 4 hour CNN news cast. As I listen, I wonder, am I getting the whole story? Is it one that has two sides exposed, so that one can develop his or her own ideas and opinions? Do the newscasters deliver the news with or without bias? It is my experience, through the means of media and literature, that the news is conveyed with a personal bias through the eyes of the newscaster.
According to Bernard Goldberg, receiver of six Emmy awards as a CBS News correspondent, he is the key witness to the personal prejudices which are emitted daily from newscasters who are solely employed to give the facts to people like us¡Kpeople who rely on other humans to give us a truthful account of what is occurring in our society (7). According to TAE¡¦s interview with Goldberg, he illustrates that the real true stories are the ones that never get airtime (7). Instead, the liberal reporters are rehashing events with gut-wrenching emotion; it is almost like watching an actor perform. I agree with Goldbergs metaphor which suggests that reporters are similar to government officials¡K.only the newscasters election takes place 5 nights a week on primetime when all the partisans are eagerly hanging on to every word. I am guilty of being this numb minded partisan, but I have had a new perception that if one is to really get the facts, you must educate yourself through self reliant ways¡K.not just superficial media whores. .. Can I say media whores¡Kwhat the hell, we¡¦re all adults º.
I think Goldberg hits it on the nail when he talks about how all informational news networks are cookie cutter versions of themselves (80). Hence the truth behind flipping through channels , 6, and 10 and having an ideal about what the reporters are talking about. The most observable aspect is that despite whom the reporter is, or what network your watching, the tone is always the same expected tone of voice. The generic voice that reporters are trained in, the obnoxious worry they cause society, just to get us to tune back in to the later news broadcast. As humans, we feed off of drama and are even elated when it is strangers with whom we are fascinated.
Bias is the self defense mechanism which entitles us as humans to have thoughts like, ¡§whoa, that person did a really crazy thing or that person is a deranged criminal¡K¡¨ The point is that the honest journalist approach would just briefly summarize those horrid facts and concentrate on a real honest story such as what is to blame for the psychology that takes place between humans to which are responsible for actually creating these stories that we crave to watch?

Impact of the Cold War

The result of the end of the Cold War has left its impact and continuing effect on us today and will continue to in decades to come. The Cold War was a bipolar balance of power between two super powers the United States and the Soviet Union (democracy vs. communism). National Security dominated foreign policies, which were the domain of the elite, making economics secondary. Although the super powers never engaged in direct conflict, each used poor underdeveloped Third World nations in their battles; such as Korea, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, and Central America.
American foreign policy has gone through many changes since the Cold War but its aim has remained the same to use American plitical, military, and economic power to assure friendly foreign regimes. Some may say that a government is deemed freindly on whether it allows U.S. corporations to operate freely within its borders. It has been the logic of American foreign policymakers that nearly all actions are justified since the U.S. represents democracy and protects freedom in the world. Many historians and critics will debate the facts where the actions taken by the U.S. in the name of democracy were justified. For example when the Soviet Union intervened in Czechoslovakia, the U.S. called it an act of naked aggression, but when the U.S. landed ,000 marines in Santa Domingo, The U.S. called it peace keeping. Another example is when Russia built a missle base in Cuba (on the invitation of Cuba), it was considered an act of war that was met with U.S. force. Later the U.S. built the largest airbase in the world in Thailand and it was hailed as being part of our ceaseless search for peace. Third World nations were called upon for advancements since they were repressive and reactionary. The U.S. formed a product of U.S. Cold War plocies to create and strengthen the radical religios groups to contain the Soviet Union and the Islamic public of Iran.
In September 001, the Russian Federation joined the U.S. and Europe in the fight against terrorism. Washinton, Moscow, NATO, and the European Union were on the same side of a major international security issue. Radical Islamic Fundamentalist groups posed a major terrorist threat to U.S. interests and friendly regimes. Iran, as we know, was one of the seven states on the States Department terrorism list, and had been agressive in nuclear weapons technology. It is an expressed concern that radical Islamic groups may exploit economic and political instabilities in Saudi Arabia. Terrorism is moving eastward from Libya, Syria, and Lebanon to South Asia with the result of the U.S. increasing their focus on Osama Bin Laden and groups operating out of Afghanistan.
The end of the Cold War has contributed to increased national security and cooperation against terrorism. One of the most frequently used tools of policymakers to deter international terrorism is the force of sanctions. Here, the governments that support politically motivated violence are prohibited from receiving U.S. economic and military assistance. The attack of the World Trade Center in N.Y. was event of extraordinary impact on international relations and a turning point in U.S. foreign policy. The event helped the U.S. identify a new enemy for its policies that were lost after the Soviet collapse.
The U.S. government has employed a wide array of policy tools to combat international terrorism. From diplomacy and international cooperation to economic sanctions, covert actions, protective security measures, and military force. Diplomatic measures are usually tried first since it is the least likely to widen conflicts. The media is also an important measure of the success of a terrorist act or campaign.
In conclusion, the outcome of the Cold War brought about many changes including a brighter outlook to the futire with Russia. Over the course of the past decade, we have worked together with Russia in developing programs to help in the fight against terrorism and in fighting Al-Quada in Afghanistan.
Being in a new security arena is not necessarily bad, but it may be unfamiliar for many policy makers. Developing diplomatic strategies to handle transnational issues is an important skill for countries now and in the future. Understanding these security issues can pave the way for a more secure and balance foreign policy.

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this short paper is to address who is the real hero in the film ?The Neverending Story?, and also to consider the key characters and their roles in the film. This movie was first released in 184. It is about a lonely little boy who in needs of a friend but instead he finds a world that needs a hero in a land beyond imagination, as he reads the book that he found. This film is about fantasy films, where it took place in the world of imagination, where anything is possible and could happen.
WHO IS THE REAL HERO IN ?THE NEVERENDING STORY?
This movie was first released in 184, it is based on a novel with the same title written by Michael Ende. It is about a 1 year old boy named Bastian who has recently and tragically lost his mother in an accident. His parents had been separated, but his dad moved back in with him after that tragedy happened. His father has Bastian?s best interest at heart, but he is too preoccupied with his own grief and too busy with all kind of responsibilities that he has until he barely acknowledge Bastian?s existence and his problems. Bastian?s only relief from his dilemmas are books. He loves to read and he has an wonderfully active imagination. One day, he found the book called ?The Neverending Story? and for the reasons that he didn?t even know, he felt so compelled to the story and he is physically drawn inside the book Soon after, he finds himself exploring the land of Fantasia, which is slowly being destroyed by the Nothing. Fantasia is in fact the vast, beautiful world inside people?s mind, it is being destroyed because humans are losing their hope. As Bastian reads about the adventures of a young warrior that The Childlike Empress of Fantasia has sent to search for a cure and to save Fantasia, whose name is Atreyu, he realises that he too is a part of the story and with the luck dragon help, Atreyu discovers how to save Fantasia through Bastian. Along with Atreyu, Bastian overcomes obstacles in an attempt to finish his journey and save Fantasia, gives the Princess a new name (Moon Child), learns important lessons of life, and gains insights to adjust to his new life without his mom.
Write my paper for me!!!
A lot of human characters and other creatures appeared in this film, but obviously the (two) key characters are Bastian and his Fantasian alter ego, Atreyu. In some ways they are very different from each other, where Bastian uses his power of imagination, while Atreyu is using his power of determination. But through out the film, it showed that they shared the same feelings, such as when the horse died they both cried over it, they eat together and finish the journey together. Both showed their own uniqueness, their strength and their heroic quality. In that film, Atreyu showed that he would not give up on his search for help to save Fantasia, while Bastian found his way and his power to fight and save Fantasia which giving him hope, belief and strength to move on with his real life that he has lost after his mom died in an accident. So, it is quite obvious that the real hero of this film is Bastian, as he is the one who saves Fantasia and gets back on his feet to battle his own fight in life.
CONCLUSION
This paper has attempted to demonstrate why Bastian is the real hero of the film. This has been demonstrated throughout his journey and his effort in saving Fantasia from the Nothings. This film is about fantasy films, where it is just pure fantasy, it has nothing to do with science at all. It is about the mind and power of imagination. The messages of this film would be that anybody could be a warrior, a hero, in their own ways and terms, and how the world is a much boring place if there is no imagination.

I sometimes wonder what the prophets and the saints and the preachers and the demy-gods must be doing, (presuming they exist) whenever they see another life lost in the name of religion. This remark neednt be misinterpreted to be from a Satan-devotee... or a demented pessimist... it is in fact from the heart of an honest human, who has given a great deal of thought to the one subject that is seemingly misread by even the connoisseurs of the Bible and the scholars of the Qoran Religion. I asked myself questions about why there is so much suffering in world today, and unlike Lord Buddha, the answer I got was not ‘desire’, as a matter of fact, it was ‘religion’, the root-cause of most terrorist activities in the modern day. Taking nothing away from Buddha though, religion too is in some ways becoming a desire, a craving to be the most dominant in numbers, to be the majority, so to speak.
Let’s, for the sake of simplification, take Islam and Christianity as our examples. When Jesus Christ preached, when he taught his sermons, I’m sure he never said that ‘ thy shalt be cured of all evil if thy sign-up as a Christian’, or perhaps, ‘register as a follower and no evil shall haunt thee’. Yet missionaries all round the world, aiming at increasing conversion-rates and thereby resurrecting statistical pointers, have the relentless tendency of painting that very picture in the eyes of the path-seekers… that ‘Christianity’ is self-curing, and that Christianity alone is the path to His divinity and that Non-Christians are trotting along blindly. Instead of spreading the content of Christ’s teachings and its real-world implications, they run a crash-course program with a stipulated time-constraint, and mop up by offering free meals to those interested in converting into Christians and adding to their numbers. The 1st century priests do this in the third world countries, the backward and underdeveloped nations, getting a few hundred new entrants into their slowly expanding list of newly baptized Christians. It’s become a kind of a code for them, a steroid that blesses them with a satisfying day’s work and a sound sleep at night. Sleeping even more soundly in another corner of the world are the Maullanahs and the preachers of the Qoran and Islam, after having brainwashed another Mussalman (Muslim) to get ready to become a Muscleman a Jehaadi, a freedom fighter for Islam. To be ready to steer a passenger-packed aircraft, headlong into a couple of towers full of breadwinners for several thousand families… all in the name of religion… all as a ‘thanks’ to Allah. ‘Allah-o-Akbar’, they say moments before they burst into flames for a cause they consider worth dying for, and more importantly - killing for! Now, if that doesn’t break the heart of Mohammed The Prophet then lets send Morpheus the Greek God of sleep and dreams to wake up the Prophet. Pardon me if you think I’m abusing God or any of his forms… in reality I am God-fearing myself. But the God I believe in is someone far too uncomplicated for most to comprehend.
To the reader, or the listener, here is a last word of advice (or should I say opinion) “Don’t get carried away with the words in your birth-certificate typed under the caption ‘Religion of birth’ it’s not that big a deal!!”

Problem A group of organisms of the same population in certain areas have a higher survival rate than other organisms of the same population in that area
Hypothesis We assumed that of the four types of beans the crazy colored would be most likely to survive the predation through generations
Procedure (Refer to Lab packet)
Results We conducted the experiment using four different types of beans, small and round green beans, large white beans, white beans marked with one black circle, and small speckled beans. The first trail showed that the small crazy colored bean was the least to be picked up and therefore had the highest survival rate. The round green bean had the second highest survival rate, and the white and the white with black had the same lowest survival rate. The second trial showed slightly different results. In the second trial the white with black beans proved to have the highest survival rate followed by the speckled beans, the all white beans, and then the small green beans in that order. The first trial was performed in slightly higher grass than the second. We assumed that the reason for the small crazy colored beans to have highest survival rate in the first trial was its unique color that helped in blend into the ground, protecting it from the sight of the predator. For the second trial we moved to a different section of grass where the white with black beans were dominant. This somewhat disproved our hypothesis. One

The shadows of long distance relationships
In todays society there is an evident amount of social problems between man and woman. The gravity of these problems worsens between those who attempt the foolish idea of a long distance relationship which proves, in the end, to be pointless and senseless.
Long distance relationships are the gateways to loneliness and discontentment the opposite of what one looks for in a loving partnership. Dr. James Castillo has published numerous psychological books on the negative effects caused by the strains of these long distance engagements. The emotional and mental scars are most likely to be life altering after experiencing a relationship where the partners are separated for a considerable amount of time. a passage from Dr. Castillos latest self-help book entitled Loving in Emptiness.Against all odds

Tormented by tragedies, illnesses, and familial tribulations, authors and poets over the ages have reflected their angst and sadness through their works. Their emotions paint colorful characters onto a canvas of paper to portray plots that keep us glued page after page. Their own souls are poured out so that they can relay their feelings as if these fictional stories are their own. Raymond Carver is no different.
Born in Clatskanie, Oregon on May 5, 18, Carver’s father immediately had a negative impact on his life by never being there for his son and when he was, he was usually drunk and abusive to Carver. His mother also worked long hours as a waitress or as a retail clerk so he was often left at home to look after his siblings while his parents worked.
By the time he was 1, Carver was married to his first wife, 16-year-old high school girlfriend Maryann Burk who was pregnant with their first child by the time she graduated from an Episcopalian private school for girls. Carver was only 1 by the time their second child was born. Once he had finished high school, he supported his family by working mediocre paying jobs such as a janitor, gas station attendant, and deliveryman. Maryann worked for the telephone company.
Hard times were ahead as money became thin and his marriage to Maryann began to disintegrate and Carver became an alcoholic. He never thought that a day would come where he would find himself a “helpless drunk.” After moving his family around the country, he found himself in Iowa at Hungate University. “Alcohol became a problem. I more or less gave up, threw in the towel and took to full-time drinking as a serious pursuit.” After working with John Cheever in a writer’s workshop in the fall of 17, they found themselves doing nothing but drinking. Cheever took himself to a treatment center, but Carver continued with his addiction to alcohol.

In June of 177, with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, Carver quit drinking and his stories that he had been working on became more and more expansive, but it was too late to save his relationship with Maryann and their marriage ended in the fall of 177. Later in 188, however, Carver married his longtime partner, poet Tess Gallagher. They had met 10 years earlier at a writers’ conference in Dallas, Texas. Two months later on August , 188, the author died of lung cancer.
Raymond Carver received many awards for his works and was highly esteemed among fellow writers. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 17; awarded grants twice from the National Endowment for the Arts; received Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award in 18, which gave him $5,000 per year, tax free, requiring that he give up any other job than writing; in 188 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and awarded Doctorate of Letters from University of Hartford; and received a Brandeis Citation fro fiction in 188. He will be long remembered as a contemporary master of the short story, and his work has been translated into more than 0 languages. Although his stories are mostly known for their knowledge of lower class society, Carver once said that, until he read critics’ reviews, he didn’t really think that his characters could be pitied “I never felt the people I was writing about were so bad off.”
