Sir Francis Drake

by Lionel Ashcroft

Francis Drake sailed across from England in a voyage that would take him around the world in three years. He sailed under secret orders from Queen Elizabeth, who privately allowed him to attack the Spanish, while publicly denying knowledge of his actions. He started out with three ships the Pelican, the Elizabeth and the little thirty ton Marigold.

They all crossed the Atlantic and sailed south down to the Straights of Magellen. Here Drake got through in only 16 days but the Elizabeth got lost and the Marigold foundered, leaving only the Pelican with 58 men on board to sail up the coast of Chile and Peru. Changing the name to the Golden Hind they anchored in Lima, Peru among 50 or so other ships and found out that a great Spanish treasure ship was just leaving for Panama. Drake chased it and captured all the gold, silver and spices on board. He then continued going north up the coast pursued by Spanish ships, he outdistanced them and hoping to find a northern passage back across to England continued up to what is now British Columbia. His sails and rigging froze and the coast was pushing them further west away from the direction they had hoped to go. Eventually they turned round and came back down the coast to California. Drake had captured a Spanish map that showed a way across the Pacific, but before he set out across an unknown ocean he had to stop and repair his ship.

Drake chose to anchor in a natural harbor whose yellow cliffs he glimpsed through the summer fog of the Marin coast. He is generally considered to have landed at what is known as Drakes Beach (though this location has been disputed), where he stayed to repair his leaky ship for six weeks. During this time he had ample opportunity to observe the natives, treating them with friendship who in turn greeted him with great honor. We are fortunate that Chaplain Fletcher on board the Golden Hind kept a meticulous diary of the whole voyage in a book called “The World Encompassed”. The book was written by Drakes nephew (also named Sir Francis Drake) printed in 168 and was an enormous Elizabethan success.

The book recounts in detail the observations of Fletcher on the customs and lifestyles of the Miwok Indians, providing valuable information on the period prior to any contact with non native people. The language and printing of the book are Elizabethan so these extracts have been modernized. They represent about half of the total entry on Drakes stay in Marin.

June 17, 157

In 8 deg.0 min. We fell in with a fit and convenient harbor and June 17, came to anchor there, where we stayed till the July. During all which time, not withstanding it was the height of summer, we were continually visited with nipping cold, neither could we at any time within a fourteen day period find the air so clear as to be able to take height the sun or stars.

The next day after our coming to anchor, the people of the country showed themselves; sending off a man with great expedition to us in a canoe. Who but being a little from the shore and a great way from our ship began to speak to us continually as he came rowing on. At last at a reasonable distance he stopped and began a solemn, long and tedious oration, using many gestures and signs and after returned to the shore again. He brought with him (as a present from the rest)a bunch of feathers, much like the feathers of a black crow, very neat and artificially gathered on a string and drawn around into a bundle; being very clean and finely cut, each equal length with the other, which they (as we after observed) who guard the king wear. They also brought a little basket of an herb they call “tabah,” both of which being tied to a short rod he cast into our boat Our General (Drake) sough to recompense him but he refused anything but a hat we threw into the water.

The third day having received a leak at sea our ship was brought nearer the shore, so that her goods being landed the ship could be repaired. Our General first landed all his men with all provisions to build tents and make a fort for the defense of ourselves and goods.

At this time, being willed by signs to lay from them their bows and arrows, they did as they were directed and so did all the rest coming by more and more to a great number both of men and women. Nothing could persuade them or remove that opinion, which they had conceived of us, that we should be gods.

In recompense of those things which they had received from us shirts, linen and cloth, they bestowed on our General feathers, capes of network, quivers of arrows made of fawn skin and other skins the women wore.

Having thus had their fill of visiting and looking at us they departed with joy to their houses which are dug round in the earth and have from the uppermost rim of the circle poles of wood set up and joined close at the top like our spires on a church, which being covered with earth allow no water to enter and are very warm, the door in the most of the also serves as a chimney to let out the smoke. Their beds are the hard ground only with rushes strewn upon it and lying around about the house they have their fire in the middle which gives a marvelous reflection to their bodies to heat the same.

Their men for the most part go naked, and the women take tule reeds and combing it after the manner of hemp make themselves a loose garment which knitted about their middle hangs down about their hips, they also wear deerskin. They are very obedient to their husbands.

At the end of three days were assembled a greatest number of people who we guessed lived in the area. Amongst them was the king himself, a man of goodly stature and handsome with his guard of about 100 tall and warlike men who this day came to see us. After two Ambassadors were sent to let us know the king desired to see us and the General giving them a gift for the king as a sign of peace, they returned a soon their king came forward with his train. They cried continually in a singing manner with a lusty courage and as they drew nearer they adopted a certain gravity in all their actions. In the front came a large man bearing a scepter (made of black wood about four feet long). Hanging from it were two crowns with three chains of a marvelous length and often doubled and a bag of Tabah. The crowns were made of knit work, wrought upon most curiously with feathers if different colors, very artificially placed and of a formal fashion.

The chains seemed to be of a bony substance; every link being very little, thin and most finely burnished, with a small hole pierced through the middle in a manner infinite. Persons are limited what number they wear, some ten some twenty depending their rank and honor.

The king had on his head a cowl of knit work made somewhat like the crowns; upon his shoulders he had a coat of rabbit fur (or squirrel). His guard had coats of the same shape, but of other skins some having cowls with feathers or down which grows on a herb like our lettuce. After these were the naked sort of common people, whose hair being long did gather in a bunch behind, in which plumes of feathers were stuck. but in the front only one feather which they wore as they pleased.

Every one had his face painted, some white, some black and some with other colors and each man had for us a present or gift of some kind. The last part were the women and children each women carrying one or two round baskets and bags of Tabah and a root called Petah, which they make a kind of meal, fish, seeds and the down mentioned before. Their baskets are made like a deep bowl and though made of rushes would hold water, about the brims were hung pieces of pearl shell two or three links at once and worked with down of red feathers.

They are a people of a tractable, free and loving nature, without guile or treachery; their bows and arrows(their only weapons) they use very skillfully, but yet not to do any great harm with them. They are so strong of body that which two or three our men could hardly carry they could pick up and carry an English mile; they are swift in running and for long periods and seldom walk but for the most part run. If they chanced to see a fish near the shore they seldom miss the chance to catch it.

The inland we found to be far different from the shore, a goodly country stored with many blessings for man. Fat deer by the thousands, a multitude of small creatures that resemble rabbits, the people eat them and use the skins.

Our general caused to be set up a monument of our being there; as also of her majesty (Queen Elizabeth) and successors right and title to that kingdom, namely a plate of brass, fast nail to a great and firm post; where upon is engraved her graces name and the day and year of our arrival there....her picture and arms in a sixpence put in a hole in the plate underneath which was engraved the name of our General.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report is aimed at providing an overview of the potential implications of Woolworths acquiring either Kmart or Target, and an overall consensus on whether this opportunity would be consistent with Woolworth’s investment and operating philosophy. The report suggests the benefits of undertaking an acquisition would significantly outweigh the costs. If Woolworths were to acquire Kmart or Target, this would significantly reduce the intense price competition currently affecting Big W, and would also enable Woolworths to continue in its pattern for sustained growth, and obtain a substantial share in the general merchandising market. A cost benefit analysis indicates that due to the similarities between Kmart and Big W’s product lines and operating philosophy, that Kmart is the most suitable takeover candidate.

BACKGROUND

Woolworths is currently in a position to undertake further acquisition activity in the marketplace. The company has consistently maintained its focus on

n Cost reduction strategies, and

n Acquisitions of core operations within the group.

in order to boost market share and continually achieve growth in profit margins.

The Retail sector currently presents a significant opportunity for Woolworths to substantially increase its market share in the sector, due to the current turmoil being experienced by Coles Myer.

Currently, Woolworths has the financial capacity to undertake acquisitions of Kmart or Target, and to acquire either of these retail giants would not only present substantial growth prospects for the company, but it would also lessen the impact of the highly competitive environment currently being experienced by Big W from these major players.

Alternatively, Big W has continually outperformed the market through its vigorous cost reduction strategies, and have demonstrated an ability to withstand the pressures from Kmart and Target. Experience indicates Big W will continue to succeed in the market, despite the highly competitive environment to which it is exposed.

PROPOSED SOLUTION/RECOMMENDATIONS

Advantages of undertaking the proposed acquisition

n Kmart and Target currently represent the greatest competitive threat to Big W. Hence, to make an acquisition of either of these competitors would certainly reduce the competitive environment in which Big W operates.

n Acquiring either Kmart or Target would enable Woolworths to establish a substantial foothold in the general merchandising market, and would no doubt result in Woolworths becoming the most dominant player in this highly competitive market.

n The business divisions in which Kmart and Target operate, are very similar to the nature of the products sold by Big W stores. Hence, Woolworths has a great level of knowledge of the general merchandising market, the key success factors driving this market, and the competitive strategies adopted by Kmart and Target. Consequently, whilst there are significant business risks that result from acquisitions, many of these risks will be mitigated by the fact Woolworths already has the expertise required to succeed in this market.

n The decision to acquire either Kmart or Target will be driven by factors such as the

- acquisition costs involved

- current position held in the market

- competitive strategy adopted by the player

- nature of the products sold, including any niche market opportunities.

- financial position of the player

The above acquisition factors will be considered in more detail below, with regard to both Kmart and Target

Acquisition Costs Involved

The acquisition would require a substantial investment for Target or Kmart. However, an acquisition would certainly ensure that Woolworths sustained its growth and the advantages of a takeover would outweigh the costs.

Current Position held in the market

Both Kmart and Target currently fit the acquisition requirements expected by management, of high volume, low margins, leveraging the costs and internal efficiencies. In particular, the CEO (Corbett) has previously commented that Kmart represents the most ideal takeover target , given it operates on the same philosophy as Woolworths.

Competitive Strategy adopted by the player

Kmart currently offers value to its customers through its “lowest prices guarantee policy”

Target is renowned for its quality products at discounted prices.

Big W is currently affected by the intensity of this price competition in the market. Hence, an acquisition of Kmart or Target would reduce the impact of intense price competition on Woolworths.

Nature of the products sold, including any niche market opportunities

Kmart offers an extensive range of apparel, toys, sporting goods, bedding, kitchenware, outdoor furniture, music, tyre and auto-service, and electrical appliances.

Targest’ core businesses lie in womenswear, childrenswear, menswear, underwear, and homewears. Baby Target and Target Home ( a new concept home-wares store) have allowed target to establish niche opportunities.

Kmart’s product range is more consistent with the type of products promoted and sold by Big W stores.

Financial position of the player

Kmart’s sales increased by 5.6% in 1-00, to $,467.7 million. Strong sales and large growth was partly contributed to by intensive marketing campaigns. Kmart has continued to excel in the market, and achieved strong sales growth during 00.

Target experienced very difficult trading conditions during 000-01, producing results that were significantly below expectations. Profit margins were severely impacted by major stock clearances and weak apparel demand. However, Target’s performance recovered during 00, with the company reporting strong profit results of 51.7million, compared to its prior year losses of $.8 million.

Due to Kmart’s consistently strong operating performance, there is less financial risk in acquiring this business. The fact that Target has experienced more turbulent trading conditions in recent years, indicates Woolworths may be faced with potential losses from the acquisition,

and this is not a desirable outcome. Hence, the acquisition of Kmart currently appears to be the most financially viable proposition.

Disadvantages of undertaking the proposed acquisition (how these can be overcome)

n Potential intervention from the ACCC, as was evidenced during the acquisition of Franklins.

n Difficulties in ensuring the acquisition process is smoothly carried out.

n The substantial cash outlay required.

The potential outcome of not undertaking any acquisition

n Even if Woolworths does not go ahead with the proposed acquisition, the company still has the capacity and resources to expand its current Big W operations, and the CEO is confident that management can continue to employ strategies to drive sales in the existing business. Project Refresh, in particular, has been the major agent of change, delivering significant cost savings, and reorganising the way business is conducted. Further, Corbett believes the market has the capacity for 50 Big W stores across Australia.

n Big W has achieved excellent financial results for the past 5 years, and has undertaken a number of initiatives including a major upgrading to logistics systems and store refurbishments, which have resulted in operating efficiencies and reduced operating costs.

n The forecasts for Big W indicate the stores will continue to experience significant growth (.6% per annum), despite the competitive pressures from Kmart and Target. Experience also indicates that Big W has consistently achieved increases in market share during the difficult periods.

n Corbett also recognizes that low logistics and warehousing costs are the key to the Big W “everyday low prices” pricing strategy, and Target and Kmart employ “high-low” strategies; that is, they mark up everyday shelf prices in order to offer dramatic discounts periodically, such as 5 % of storewide. According to Corbett, the strategies being adopted by the major players are not as successful as those currently being employed by Big W.

n Many new initiatives are being trialled for Big W to ensure the company remains competitive. In March this year, the self-scanning technology was trialled at two Sydney Big W stores, allowing customers to scan and pay for purchases themselves. We are currently monitoring the system with regard to

- effectiveness

- impact on customers

Implementing the technology across all stores could provide Big W with a significant competitive edge over the other retailers, and allow for even greater efficiencies in the way Big W operates.

CONCLUSION

As a result of the above analysis, it is evident that the most financially viable and suitable takeover target is Kmart, due to the following factors

n Its consistent growth performance and potential for future growth.

n Its focus on high volumes, low prices, leveraging costs and internal efficiencies. (acquisition criteria)

n Its similar operating philosophy and product range to Big W.

n Its price competition strategy adopted in the marketplace.

The acquisition of Kmart would allow Woolworths to gain a substantial share in the general merchandising market, and allow the company to utilize its current expertise in the market to effectively position itself in the market and sustain the company’s growth. Whilst not undertaking any acquisition would not seriously inhibit the company’s ability to expand operations, the cost benefit analysis indicates that this takeover opportunity presents Woolworths with a viable investment opportunity that should not be ignored.

Co-Cultural Communications Challenges

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Co-Cultural Communications Challenges even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. They are striving to provide the best ever services to the most desperate students that have already lost the hope for academic success. We offer the range of the most widely required, however, not recommended for college use papers. It is advisable to use our examples like Co-Cultural Communications Challenges in learning at public-education level. Get prepared and be smart with our best essay samples cheap and fast! Get in touch and we will write excellent custom coursework or essay especially for you.

Co-Cultural Communication Challenges

Respecting diversity is a sign of equality. But, to respect diversity, one must understand the terminology behind it. The typical stereotype of diversity is not just being different, but actually encompasses educational background, life differences, and cultures. In reality, diversity is simply a point or respect in which things differ. Instead, minority deals with ethnic, racial, religious, or other groups having a distinctive presence within a society. By clarifying the meaning of those two terms, then one can understand co-cultural communication. Culture is often the root of communication challenges. Culture can be defined as a system of shared of values, beliefs, customs, and behaviors. Also, culture is a group or community with which we share common experiences that shape the way we understand the world. In Texas we have a number of co-cultures (see Exhibit A). Co-cultures is defined as a group whose beliefs or behaviors distinguish it from the larger culture of which it is a part and with which it shares numerous similarities. Similarities include language, religion, economics, age, gender, and sexual orientation.

There are six fundamental patterns of co-cultural differences. These include different communication styles, different attitudes toward conflict, different approaches to completing tasks, different decision-making styles, different attitudes toward disclosure, and different approaches to knowing. Because America is the most diverse nation in the world, it is important to understand the different communication styles within the co-cultures in order to accept and respect what makes each of us unique.

The need to communicate is universal. Most misunderstandings among people result from different co-cultural experiences. Most of us desire to communicate effectively, but do not have a keen appreciation of the barriers to be faced. Because of these barriers, there is ample opportunity for something to go wrong in any communication. Effective communication is difficult under the best of conditions. Four specific problems related to language difficulties that typically arise in co-cultural communication include semantics, word connotations, tonal differences, and different perceptions.

Webster defines semantics as “the meaning or relationship of meanings of a sign or set of signs; connotative meaning; the language used (as in advertising or political propaganda) to achieve a desired effect on an audience especially through the use of words with novel or dual meanings.” Simply put, almost every commonly used word has more than one meaning. Also, words have regional meanings or derive new meanings as a result of the development of new industries or fields. The meaning conveyed by the senders words depends upon the experience and attitude of the receiver. Therefore, one way to penetrate the semantic communication barrier is for the sender to strive to speak or write in terms of the receivers experience and attitude.

Combined with semantics, word connotation is a common communication barrier. Word connotation is a word’s association with social attitude, evaluation, emotional affect, etc. Words often have essentially the same denotation, but different connotations. The dictionary definition is known as a denotation. The attached meaning a receiver might associate with a word is known as a connotation. For example, the boss wants an employee to pick up a cheap calculator. Now, does the employee define that word as inexpensive or poorly made? When sending a message, analyze the words to determine what connotation a receiver might attach.

Also, tonal differences can be a barrier in the communication process. Tonal differences include accent and dialect, pronunciation, fluency, emotion, etc. In American English, nonstandard dialects exist within all racial, ethnic and regional groups. Each dialect is a product of distinct social, historical, cultural and educational factors. All are legitimate in that they represent the concepts, needs and intentions of their speakers.

Finally, an individual’s perceptions have an effect on the communication process. Perception is a three-phase process of selecting, organizing and interpreting information. Perceptual biases occur when people react to stimuli in the environment in very different ways. We each have shortcuts that we use to organize data. Invariably, these shortcuts introduce some biases into communication. Some of these shortcuts include stereotyping, projection, and self-fulfilling prophecies. Stereotyping is one of the most common. This is when we assume that the other person has certain characteristics based on the group to which they belong without validating that they in fact have these characteristics. Effective communication requires deciphering the basic values, motives, aspirations, and assumptions that operate across geographical lines. Given some dramatic differences across cultures in approaches to such areas as time, space, and privacy, the opportunities for miscommunication while we are in cross-cultural situations are plentiful.

In both todays markets place and at home, the challenge to be open minded and put aside prejudice and stereotypes are more of a challenge then ever. The crisis in the Middle East has brought prejudice back to the national forefront. Many Americans look at people with Middle-Eastern features and assume they are terrorist. Without any provocation or prompting an act of prejudice or stereotyping can happen. An American Airlines captain put a middle easterner off the aircraft soon after the September 11th tragedy. The gentleman had not done anything wrong. He had passed all the heighten security checks, and he had a paid in fully ticket. Because of the Captains prejudice or stereotyping the middle-eastern gentleman was delayed and humiliated. There are many other cases like this since the September 11th tragedy. We as Americans must look for ways to better understand the various cultures that make up or country, and rise above these acts of prejudice and stereotyping.

Learning how to live and work in a co-cultural society comes in many forms and facets. It can start as early as school age children. In many schools, co-cultural menus are starting to flourish. Some schools whose population is a particular ethnicity are attempting to provide more ”American” food. Lyons Township HS, North Campus, La Grange, IL, has tried fusion cooking to support the schools diversity program. The school adopts a culture each month then provides entre’s, main courses and soups from that culture. This gives the students a look at the co-cultures that make up their school, their neighborhoods and their towns.

At Yeshiva Ohr Torah School in Manhattan, the 400 plus students are all of the Jewish religion. The school in trying to teach both how co-cultures make up their city, along with keeping to their strict Kosher diets. The school does this by making kid favorites like pizza, but ensuring the ingredients are made within the kosher requirements. The milk for the cheese is made to kosher specifications. Only plain cheese and vegetables are used with kosher seasoning. Soy products are made to look and taste like pepperoni and sausage. All this is so the children of the strict Jewish discipline can adhere to their beliefs, but learn about others.

Learning about co-cultures is also something big business is doing today. Take Kmart for instance. They have created a position of the chief officer of diversity. Her name is Randy Allen and she reports directly to Kmarts Chairman and CEO Chuck Conway. Her responsibility will be to oversee the companys multi-cultural activities.

In addition to Randy, Kmart has hired Rose Reza as the senior vice president, multi-cultural merchandizing. Roses job will be to develop merchandizing assortment appropriate for the many communities so that the company will be able to connect with the many co-cultures that make up the Kmart customer base.

Finally, Sears has stepped out with its new flagship co-cultural store in Chicago. The 50,000 square-foot store is in the old State Street shopping district. It will carry the normal Sears products, along with gowns that are more African American inspired and more hard lines aimed at apartment dwellers. Since these are the co-cultures that make up the surrounding area, Sears feels like this will bring in more of the community to shop at their store. Sears is also in the process of spending $0 million to renovate six other Chicago stores to make them more community friendly and stock them with the surround co-culture in mind.

There are many issues at stake here. How can the co-cultures flourish with todays issues at hand? How can the children of tomorrow understand co-cultures and not have a prejudice or stereotype about someone because of the way they look or the food they eat. And how can they learn to deal with prejudice when they see it so they can learn why someone is prejudice and maybe have a better understanding. With the programs in place from the school in Manhattan to the business across America, society is learning that many co-cultures exist all around them. To survive today, the question is will America learn to live with these co-cultures.

Why does co-cultural diversity matter? Anytime a group or segment of our population is excluded or oppressed, all of us are denied. It has become a matter of increased importance for businesses to understand and take appropriate actions concerning co-cultural diversity. When all segments are respected and utilized, everyone benefits. The management of co-cultural diversity has been accepted and deemed very important in American businesses. Employers now recognize that a co-culturally diverse workforce is a benefit, that not only brings down the cost of absenteeism and employee turnover, but also can increase their bottom line. This importance has been recognized and now surpasses the legal/moral issue, into one of business necessity.

Each of us, in our own way, can make a difference. We have the power to create a respectful workplace, classroom or society as a whole. We first must identify our own attitudes, delete group labels and work toward the common goal of understanding and acceptance.

Sometimes the most difficult concept to understand and accept is that, everyone is equal to everyone else… yet, each of us is different.

What makes us different? How do we negotiate our similarities and differences? It must be recognized and understood that all people belong to a particular group’. Because of the uniqueness of the group, one is often proud to wear its label and belong. However, a person does not succeed-or-fail-merely because of belong that particular group. As long as we respect personal differences as being important and are truly responsive to the fact that being different is okay, we become part of the solution.

People come in all sizes and colors, speak many languages, eat different foods, wear different clothes, are smart in some things… and not so smart in others. But the same world is home to all of us.

Diversity isnt just a concept; it should be a way of life. It is a misnomer to assume that our government can legislate our perceptions. It may be illegal to discriminate, but only if one is caught. Prejudice cannot be banished by laws, or controlled with fear. No one is born intolerant it is learned and practiced. The only way to unravel the bundle of fear, or misconceptions, we have of each other is to talk. The thought process or conceptions about each group must be broken down and re-evaluated. None of us have a monopoly on how to live correctly. Instead, we need to be open-minded to the differences in each of us. It may be the road-less-traveled, but it is that road that we must all travel. For it is the diversity that makes us all equal.

Jean Dauberval was born in France in 174. He is a world wide known French ballet

dancer and choreographer. Much of his style was learned from his teacher Noverre but did

much to disseminate his teacher’s ideas on the ballet d’action (ballet with a plot). Dauberval

was best known as the inventor of the comedy ballet. Dauberval’s genre was during the Pre-

Romantic Ballet. The types of dance he worked with during this time was

character or better known as the movement of another nationality, ethnic group, social

class, dances of character or portraying specific historical character, and demi-Character which

was Ballet with folk style. Dauberval made his first appearnce at the Paris Academie (now

Opera) and became noted for his pantomimic dance ability. In 177 he became an assitant

ballet master. In 178 he went on as a dancer to Bordeaux where he later served as ballet

master. He than became popular for his best-known ballet, LA FILLE MAL GARDEE, first

produced in 1786. La Fille Mal Gardee was one of the first comic ballets and one of the first to

include realistic rather than mythological or idealistic characters. It is the oldest ballet still

being performed. This ballet was the first to use the lives of the peasants as the plot. Although

Dauberval’s original choreography was lost, there are serveral more recent versions based upon

the original scenerio. Among his best-known students were Charles-Louis Didelot, Jean Aumer

and Sal Vigano.

Carlo Blasis was born in Italy in 177 and trained in France to later on leave his mark as

mid-nineteenth-century ballet choreographer, theorist, and pdagogue extraordinaire who

trained the first generation of great Italian ballerinas. His genre was during the Romantic Ballet.

He was a student of Dauberval. He was best known for the responsibility for the importance of

technique for Italian dancers. In 187 Blasis became the Imperial Dancing Academy’s director.

In 1861, he went to Russia, where he spent the next several years teaching at Moscow’s Bolshoi

Theater, reviving and restaging ballets from the company’s repertory, and mounting new

productions. Blasis choreographed for the Bolshoi Faust (1861), Two Days in Venice, or The

Venetian Carnival (186), Orfa (186), and Pygmalion (186) as well as one that failed to

materialize, Cagliostro. Blasis published two textbooks, Treatise on the Art of Dancing and

Code of Terpischore, in which he codified his teaching methods and all that was known of

ballet technique. These books form the basis of our modern classical training.

Both men have contributed to the life of ballet in many ways. Both of their styles and

techniques are still being used and perfected. Their style and techniques have enhanced the

teaching of ballet and continue to draw the attention if those whom have good taste in dancing.

Is it rational to be altuistic?

Is it rational to be altruistic?

It is first important to define the term altruism. In his article ‘Egoism and Altruism’, B. Williams uses the word morality to also imply altruism and gives us a ‘minimal interpretation’ of it and refers to it as ‘ a general disposition to regard the interests of others’. He also introduces the ‘possibility of limiting one’s own projects’ as a further feature of altruism. What is meant to be rational? Williams defines it from what he calls a Kantian standpoint the structure of practical reason. Economists hold that all decisions that are made are rational. Blackburn writes about the ‘economic man’ in ‘Looking Out for Yourself’ as a paradigm of self-interested rationality rather than a moral paradigm. Rationality seems to be equated with a form of egoism a self-centred pursuit to fulfil your own interests. It does seem to be the argument that it is not rational to be altruistic, but just that it is more morally correct for a person to be of a more altruistic persuasion.

Williams states why it wouldn’t be rational for one to be egoistic, but not why it would be rational for one to be altruistic. In ‘The Amoralist’ he does not think that it is possible to argue someone into caring about something; only would this be possible if morality ‘can be got off the ground rationally’, but I don’t see how he does that in either of his articles. Williams does not see this as defeat for reason or rationality, but instead, a defeat for humanity. Sidgwick, quoted in Mackie (in ‘Sidgwick’s Pessimism’) states a similar point, that a person who takes his own happiness or pleasure as the ultimate end ‘there seems no opening for any line of reasoning to lead him to Universalistic Hedonism’ or concern for the happiness or welfare of others than himself. Williams take a rather extreme viewpoint throughout the entire essay ‘Egoism and Altruism’, and seems on intent proving that egoism is not morally right. He does this by presenting arguments that may change a person from an egoistic standpoint to more altruistic grounds. However Williams does little to show that is it rational to be altruistic; he instead states the need for an internal and external justification of altruism does this equate to rationality? He argues that if it is possible to show that altruism is necessary for society, and society for human life, then this externally provides justification or altruism. The internal justification is the personal satisfaction that would result from behaving altruistically. Williams doesn’t provide explicit arguments for why we should be altruistic, and certainly not why it would be rational to be altruistic. He seems to imply in his conclusion that whilst it may not be possible to find rationalistic grounds for being altruistic, it is nevertheless right. He disagrees with Kant that it is possible to elicit altruism from certain structural conditions on rational practical thought. Williams favours the Humean claim that it is not such conditions, but rather a certain desire or sentiment from a person that constitutes the vital step in the direction of altruism.

Williams states that it is not possible by a ‘purely rational process’ to change the egoist from having ‘I-desires’ to a more altruistic standpoint that he favours and having ‘non-I desires’. He does say it would be irrational for one to be egoistic if they claimed that it was all right for them but not all right for others to behave in the same fashion. Williams uses the loaded word ‘desire’ on many occasions without providing a clear definition of what he means by it. It also seems to me as though what is left wanting is the need for a distinction between the term ‘desire’ and ‘need’. People do not only desire and want things; there are certain things that could be argued that are a necessity for the individual. Can these needs, such as hunger and a need for warmth be thought of in terms of ‘I desire’ and ‘non-I desire’? Perhaps not everything can be divided into two distinct categories between what you desire for yourself and what you desire for others. Williams does not make absolutely clear what he means by the terms ‘non-I desires’ and ‘I-desires’. Is he implying that these are two completely separate states of being? I think that the distinction between the two is not that clear and certain. It is possible to have desires that take into account the well being of yourself and others at the same time. In ordinary life, do people actually think in terms of self and others all the time? I think not. Decision-making in day-to-day life is not as rational as this and there are many factors affecting a decision, so perhaps it is not appropriate to think of altruism and morality in general in terms of solely being other or self-directed action. Williams recognises this and states that all he wishes to claim is that both sorts of desires are possible and to challenge the notion that all human action is ultimately only self directed. Related to the problem of desire above, Blackburn makes an interesting point, that sometimes we act not so much in ways that we want to act, but in ways we feel we should act. Are we still fulfilling a desire to please others? Also, that the satisfaction of certain desires may be the release of tension rather than the onset of pleasure. Blackburn writes about our concerns, things that matter to us; that enter our reasoning and that we care about. So, there are things, other than our desires that motivate us.

Perhaps on an individual level it is not rational, nor is it possible to be rational and altruistic. I do not think that this prevents people from performing altruistic acts. Sometimes we may do things that are not in our interest, but we desire to do them, e.g. get even with someone take revenge. Is this egoism? Is the fact that we desire to do something enough to make it an act of egoism? Taking revenge may not be in our self interest, in fact it may be harmful to our interests, so what can be considered as the rational, self-interested motivation behind such an action? This provides a further argument against the notion that human action is rational. A person wanting to help save the rainforest does not immediately seem to be acting on egoistic impulses. But on reflection, if it is considered to be his ‘desire’ to help save the rainforest, and he does do something positive to protect the rainforest, can he be said to have fulfilled a desire that was ultimately an ‘I desire’ and labelled an egoist? If we argue from these grounds, then every action can be reduced to an ‘I-desire’ and a need to do something for yourself. Broad classifies desires which have this kind of underlying cause as other-regarding but self-referential, that is, the doctrine that ‘each of us has specially strong obligations to benefit certain persons and groups of people who stand in special relations to himself’. The reason for desiring something is that is bears some relationship to myself. Whenever we do something, it results from the self in some form; otherwise we would not have the motivation to carry out the act, and self-referential altruism forms, and had always formed, says Mackie, a large part of common sense morality. As Blackburn says, our actions reveal what most concerns us, at that time. Blackburn notes an important distinction that Butler makes between the a) object of my particular desire (e.g. for food or for happiness of my neighbour) and b) the pleasure that will arise upon the satisfaction of this desire. Butler doesn’t think this alone is enough to say that the ‘principle’ of my action is ultimately self-love. Perhaps it is a question of the degree of the egoistic and altruistic elements present in a person’s character and subsequently, the degree of altruism or egoism present in their actions. But how could this possibly be quantified and measure?

In conclusion, I think that it is not rational to be altruistic on an individual level. This is because I don’t think we (on the whole) act or think rationally in our daily lives. I do believe that it is possible to behave altruistically, when altruism is defined as thinking about the interests of others. The welfare of those connected to us through ties of family or friendship is important to most people and I do think that we consciously make decisions and relate the outcomes of every action back to our own interests. However, I think it can be considered a possibility that we may, or can, be rationally altruistic on a societal level. Certain people, such as governments certainly aim to show that they attempt to behave altruistically but whether they actually do or not is questionable. In our society, individuation and competition are encouraged. People are also seen to have a duty and responsibility for the care of others. I don’t think that these two ideas have to be opposing or mutually exclusive. To have concern for the welfare or yourself and others seems to me to be inherent in human behaviour.

Tattoos

Every day you see people walking down the street with tattoos. These people are often stereotyped as being “bad asses” but why? Tattoos are not always worn by rough crowds nor do they make people tough. So why is it that a majority of the population looks down on them and feels that they are wrong? They are merely a form of art; no different than someone who enjoys certain paintings on their walls except that hey are permanently hung on the person who buys them. Most people with tattoos do not just go out and get them for the hell of it or because of the image that it can give them; it is a thought out process of elimination to find the perfect piece. There are hundreds of thousands of different pieces to choose from.Just the other day I was in line at subway ordering a sandwich when a man needed to get in front of me. I heard someone from the back line say “just go up to front of the line” then the man said “I don’t want to get beat up”. Instantly I knew that he was talking about me because I had a tank top on and I have tattoos all over my arms. This made me feel uncomfortable because I could not understand why someone would think that about me. Just because a person has tattoos it does not mean that they are a bad person who wants to fight with everyone. Many times I have encountered people judging me before they know me. From personal experience I have found that some people think of the hells angels or some other type of gang when they see people like me. Tattoos are a reflection of someone’s personality but it is unusual to meet someone who understands why. Only the person who wears the tattoo can fully understand why they got it. I have also come across people who think that tattoos are unsanitary there for they feel that the people who have them are unsanitary. This is a big misconception. There are rules and regulations for tattooing just like anything else in this world. Everything that is involved in the procedure must be sanitary and sterile. The needles used for the actual tattooing are cut and thrown away after the tattoo is preformed. Part of the reason for people thinking this is because when you walk into t tattoo parlor there are all kinds of weird art covering the wall, from freaky to perverted to cute. One might be overwhelmed by all the pictures and not know what to think which in turn could easily give them a bad name.Tattooing is an ancient art that has been around for a long time it has evolved just like anything else and because of this certain people disrespect it. It is just a personal preference and a way to show ones personal thoughts. Tattoos do not make people mean and they are not an implication that someone has a bad personality.

The purpose of human life is an unanswerable question. It seems impossible to find an answer because we dont know where to start looking. To us, existence seems to be something imposed on us by an unknown force. There seems to be no reason for it, therefore making the world seem choatic. For this reason, society tries to make meaning of it by materialistic purposes to distract us from the fact that it is actually a hopless and mysterious predicament. Samuel Becketts two act play, Waiting For Godot, captures this feeling and view of the world.

This viewpoint is shown by the difference between Pozzo and Lucky in both Act I and II. Since this world is soley based on chance, human lives are treated in an almost cruel manner. In act one, Pozzo is traveling to the market to sell Lucky. Pozzo is totally healthy. Lucky is a perfectly normal slave who has started to annoy Pozzo, so he is going to be sold. This is the first way Valdimir and Estrogen see this odd couple. However, the next day Pozzo and Luckys predicament have changed. Pozzo is blind and Lucky has become a mute. When Valdimir and Estrogen confront them on these drastic hcanges, Pozzos answers are confused. He has absolutely no recollection of the day before when he ordered Lucky to think and claims Lucky has always been a mute. When Valdimir asks him when he became blind, Pozzo responds, I woke up one find day as blind as fortune. When Valdimir asks him for details, Pozzo answers violently, Dont question me! The blind have no notion of time. The things of time are hidden from them too!

The fact that Renton, one of the main characters, starts off the book with severe junk withdrawal really sets the mood for the rest of the book. He also refers to most of his friends as ...a cunt.., which gives us a big insight into his dark, depressed character. The book is written for the most part in Edinborough dialect, and is a collection of disjointed, sickening and often gut-wrenching tales about a group of socially dysfunctional people, who could be described as friends, in a very loose way.

It lays bare to the base, coarse, and bleak souls of the junkies, wide boys, psychos and drunkards who exploit the system, and frequent the pubs and clubs of Edinborough, lining the pockets of the dealers, and keeping the filth busy.

Welsh explores the terror of HIV, and other everyday issues in Edinborough, while at the same time somehow inserting a black humour and absurd irony into the depressing downward spiral of his characters lives.

...it may feel like a bad day in bedlam, but boy is it exhilirating.

The novel is very uncomfortable, but in some ways a breath of fresh air, freed from the monotony of political correctness, and straight into the disturbing world of the no-hopers, addicts and schizos. The stories we hear are retched from the gullet. This is the real world, horrific, debauched, stripped of all false niceities and raw; a trip back to the dark ages, or a wake-up call from reality?

i thought this book was of excellent quality, mind boggoling but full of charisma and excitment.

“Like a Winding Sheet” by Ann Petry

In Ann Petry’s “Like a Winding Sheet”, we see a black man mind abducted by the disease called racism, which he try’s to overcome by applying the values put upon him by his family. Having been living with racism so long, he struggles to continue to fight for his family beliefs.

“Like a Winding Sheet” is about a Blackman name Mr. Johnson who lives with his wife Mae. They both work the night shift, in a labor plant. Johnson is always late for work because the aches in his legs. One Friday on the thirteen day of the month, Johnson went to work and got chewed up by his boss for being late. Then Johnson got rejected at the all-night-restaurant by the coffee lady. Every time someone rejects or come off inappropriate, Johnson looks at the situation as a racial insult and gets extremely mad. The only way to control his anger is the values bestowed on him by his family’s upbringings. Can his family’s values hold value when his anger gets unbearable?

In “Like a Winding Sheet”, Ann Petry uses structure to show the birth to the death of Johnson’s struggles. She also shows symbols like the “lipstick” and “Wind Sheet” to argue why Johnson struggles to continue to fight for his family’ belief, not to hit on women.

In the beginning Johnson had an argument with his wife Mae about why she should go to work despite it was Friday the Thirteen. Petry states, “He couldn’t bring

himself to talk to her roughly or threaten to strike her like a lot of men might have done. He wasn’t made that way” (85), which states his family’s belief, the birth. This first argument symbolizes the beginning of Johnson “winding in a sheet”.

Johnson’s belief is tested when he has a discussion with his boss Ms. Scott, which is a white women that yells at him for being late and calls him a “Nigger” in the process. Johnson gets mad and wants to hit his boss for being racist but, “ He stood motionless for a moment and turned away from the red lipstick on her mouth that made him remember that the foremen was a women” (86). The lipstick symbolizes a woman which makes Johnson recall his family’s values. Johnson continues to “Wind in the sheet”, growing.

Johnson’s belief is tested again when he went to the all-night-restaurant to get a hot cup of coffee after work. He stood in line with the others, but when his turn came up “No more coffee for awhile”, the white coffee lady said. Johnson got mad “He wanted to do was hit her so hard that the scarlet lipstick on her mouth would smear and spread over her nose, her chin, out toward her cheeks; so hard that she would never toss her head again and refuse a man a cup of coffee because he was black” (88). As the conflicts continue and Johnson got madder the “lipstick” starts to less symbolize a woman. The “winding sheet” also continues to get tighter as Johnson continues to grow.

Finally Johnson belief was tested for the last time against his wife, Mae. Johnson came home after being mad all day. He started snapping out on his wife about her gum popping and her nagging about him sitting on her work pants that was laid over the back of the chair. By now Johnson was so tight in the “winding sheet” he probably couldn’t breathe. Mae said “You’re nothing but an old hungry nigger trying to act touch and” (0). After that statement Johnson was waiting for Mae to giggle to represent a joking matter, but he didn’t give her a chance to, and “She was standing close to him and that funny tingling started in his finger tips, went fast up his arms and sent his fist shooting straight for her face” (0). “ She screamed that he realized he had hit her in the mouth- so hard that the dark red lipstick had blurred and spread over her full lips, reaching up toward the tips of her nose, down toward her chin, out toward her cheeks” (0). The lipstick symbolized nothing at the end. The only way to get out of a “winding sheet” is to unwind yourself out of it, “He groped for a phrase, a word, something to describe what this thing was like that was happening to him and he thought it was like being enmeshed in a winding sheet-that was it-like a winding sheet” (0). Johnson continued to hit her repeatedly to get out of the “winding sheet”. Johnson died because he didn’t continue to fight for his family’s belief, not to hit on woman.

In Ann Petry’s “ Like a Winding Sheet” I argued that the no matter how mad you get, you can’t keep it bottled up inside of you for so long, eventually you won’t be able to breath. You will be in a “winding sheet” and one day you will have to unwind from the sheet to survive. People come across a lot of battles and walk away from them because something or somebody gave them a tool, or a way to get out of a fight. At some point in your life those tools or ways of getting you out of a fight will lessen as you get madder and angrier, and you hope another tool come along or another way comes along to stop you from using you fist. If that tool or way does not come along the old tools become no use and you are forced to unwind out of your sheet.

Assignment Business for Engineering

Introduction

This is a brief report containing a table of the UK’s GPD for the 11-year period 18 to 1. A graph of the data has been produced to show the results more clearly. The percentage increase and the average annual percentage increase in GDP will be calculated from the period 10-1. Also the years in which the actual increase were the least and the greatest will be obtained.

A Line graph showing the UK’s GDP for the period 18 to 1.

Percentage increase in GDP over the 10 year period 10 to 1

The percentage increase in GDP is calculated by using the following formula

Percentage Increase = Change in GPD x 100

Original GPD

Therefore the Percentage Increase = (78785 50147) x 100 = 57.01%

50147

Another way of finding the percentage increase in GDP from 10-1 is by working out all the individual annual percentage increases for each year, and then adding them together.

This gives an increase in GDP of 54.85%.

The average annual percentage increase in GDP over the 10 year period from 10 to1

To work out the average annual percentage increase the individual annual percentage increase of each year must be worked out first. This is calculated using the formula shown on the previous page. The answers are showed in the table below in the annual percentage increase column. The average can then be found by adding up the values and dividing them by 10 (the number of values). The average annual percentage increase is 5.4%

The year in which the actual increase in GDP was the greatest and the least.

The table above shows that the highest increase in GDP was 4108, which occurred in year 17. The lowest increase is 1664, which is year 11. These values were found by subtracting the previous actual annual increase away from the current GDP.

When corporations market a product globally choosing a brand name is a major factor in the success of that product. Handi-Wrap is a very well known brand in the United States, but in other parts of the world like the United Kingdom and Australia, the brands name is considered funny but still effective, but what about in other countries like Germany, Sweden or Japan? The brand Handi-Wrap works in the United States because English is the official language of the nation; it works in the United Kingdom and Australia for the same reason, but does the brand name lose its effectiveness in nations where languages other than English are routinely spoken or does the brand remain effective even there? Should multinational corporations market a single brand internationally or change their brand names to the local cultures? Studies have shown that brands can be as effective internationally as they are in the US (Shoham and Kropp 114). Coca-Cola and Handi-Wrap are common brands in the US; people all over the world understand the name of Coke, but what of Bayer Aspirin or Ford Motor Company should multinational companys market their products as a nation-specific product, a single brand or choose a middle route? There is an obvious advantage when using multiple names in different nations. Handi-Wrap may be a slang term in English; however, its meaning can be clear in all English-speaking nations. In China, or in other countries, its meaning could be considered vulgar or rude, if understandable at all. It can be advantageous to use names specific to chosen languages, and that has been the way that many have chosen in the past. Their marketing and advertising efforts have been targeted to a specific language, though the culture of the nation must also be taken into account. For example, like a play on words that works well in the United States may be completely worthless and meaningless in the United Kingdom. However, those brands using the same names for their products regardless of the nation or culture in which they are being marketed, still appear to have greater success today. For example the success of LOreal cosmetics has been built on promoting different brands in different nations, choosing which to promote were based on views of the local cultures (Anonymous 4). For people interested in finding the most American product possible, the French company uses the name Maybelline. Those preferring the most French are given the LOreal brand, there are even Italian brands for other preferences. All the different lines are sold in all of the markets, but only one is excessively promoted. The result of this is LOreal has been able to maintain double-digit growth for more than a decade. LOreals net profits rose 15% in 18, to $768 million, while its stock has soared 00% in the late 0s. Whether its selling Italian elegance, New York street smarts, or French beauty through its brands, LOreal is expanding out globally to millions of people across a larger range of incomes and cultures. This is what sets LOreal apart from one brand marketers such as Coca-Cola Co., which sells one brand globally to all cultures (Anonymous 4). Single brand corporations like “McDonalds” sell to all nations of the world, regardless of the language spoken in each their brand is recognized. The people in the local markets, in which McDonald’s burgers and fries are sold, understand just what to expect when ordering any number of choices available on their menu (Green 4). Similarly, Wal-Mart is understood in all nations containing a Wal-Mart store; whatever the words may or may not mean, the quality of the brand is known worldwide. Though the term Wal-Mart may have no meaning in the language of the country it is located in; the local people understand exactly what to expect from any store they enter seeing the Wal-Mart name and logo on the front of the store. One major advantage of using a single global brand name is that language is not so ignorant now. While it was not always possible to promote a successful single brand name in the past, it is common now to see articles written in a specific language referring to business enterprises that carry these names completely foreign to these cultures, expressed in terms of the words they use in their everyday life. McDonalds is a highly foreign-sounding collection of characters and symbols in China, yet the McDonalds locations there perform well and are very profitable. Aaker and Joachimsthaler (1) write, Brand builders everywhere think they want global brands; however, global brand leadership, not global brands, should be the priority (17). This is not saying that a global brand must be exactly the same in every market. For example Visa changes its logo in some countries; Heineken means something different in the Netherlands than it does abroad (Aaker and Joachimsthaler 17). A major consideration in building a global brand is how advertising will be received in specific markets. Advertising generally reflects cultural characteristics in a given country’s values, beliefs, and trends. These need to be clearly understood and recognized to make sure that the specific message is heard and understood in the way a company wants it to be (Inso Corporation int00006). Advertising that can be fun and effective in the United states can be seen as highly vulgar and looked down upon in the United Kingdom or Japan. Yet Proctor & Gamble keep its brands and its promotions identical throughout the world. IBM spends much less in advertising by creating a single global advertising campaign than it would to create different campaigns for all its markets (Aaker and Joachimsthaler 17). The approach is much easier to manage than many country specific strategies, but it is also harder to succeed. In addition, any poor choice in advertising is much more costly in that it is not contained in a single market, but is spread to all markets all over the world. Their is a difference in creating a global brand and creating a global advertising campaign. Aaker and Joachimsthaler (1) write that advertising often is the cornerstone of the global brand-building effort, when focus instead should be concentrated on making the brand the leader in each market it competes. This was the approach of Coca-Cola in the early days. Today it is able to consolidate its advertising internationally because it is a leader in each of its markets, not because it is trying to become one. Developing a global strategy also can work against the effort to create economies of scale through consolidating global advertising. No campaign is suitable for all markets of the world, and adjustments usually are needed to be made either for each market or type of market even when the general advertising message remains consistent. It is sometimes cheaper and more effective for companies to create ads locally than to import ads and then adapt them for each market (Aaker and Joachimsthaler 17). Several companies have chosen a middle route to international marketing. For example, in Europe, Audi uses the best of both ways; it selects one agency from a group of five chosen to compete for its international marketing efforts. The winning agency develops campaigns and directs the course they will take, but the four agencies not winning the top slot are still able to manage the campaigns in their own countries. The result is all advertising is controlled, but there are five company’s involved instead of only one. Each company is still able to compete in the future with each other and each maintain a relationship with Audi (Aaker and Joachimsthaler 17). Smirnoff Vodka has an effective middle-road approach to international marketing and brands. With the theme of pure thrill, all of Smirnoffs worldly advertising is distorted pictures that become visible when viewed through the Smirnoff bottle. This way the local market culture is in the scene that appears the scenes change from country to country, in order to appeal to the market in that country. For example in Rio de Janeiro, the ad shows the citys statue of Christ with a soccer ball, and in Hollywood, the W in the hillside sign is created with the legs. (Aaker and Joachimsthaler 17). No method of brand marketing works for all markets of the world, and there are not any specific formulas for deciding what is the best way for corporations to approach a certain market. Corporations must take into consideration the specific cultures, the products they are promoting, and the impact they wish to gain form advertising. The decision should be made on the desired results that the corporation wishes to achieve. Bibliography Bibliography Aaker, David A. and Erich Joachimsthaler. The Lure of Global Branding. To whom it may concern

This letter is to confirm that Mark Dyaliewicz and his wife have taken a hour proficiency course on basic boat handling with me at Reed Point Marina, Port Moody, BC on Saturday, September 7, 00. The course was on their vessel and covered basic fundamentals such as correct mooring procedures, safe use of shorepower, preparation for leaving dock, undocking, basic maneuvering, vessel right of way, and docking. Mark did most of the operating and appeared to learn quickly. He said he would contact me for a follow up session if he felt it was needed. They are planning to attend the CPSS course this fall. I have learnt so much throughout my high school life and I am looking forward to the new challenges that await me in the future. My past experiences in and outside of school have guided and influenced my philosophy on life and helped decide my ultimate future plans.

When I am older I would like to become an IT Consultant, following the footsteps of my father. I feel that it would provide a great lifestyle for my family and me. It is a career that I would surely enjoy. I love everything to do with computers and think that the career of an IT Consultant would not only accommodate a good life style but would also be a fun industry to work in. I wanaccomplish for me. This year I have set several goals To get on the honour roll each term, to get a high B average and to go to University or College. To reach these goals I have to be on time, attend all my classes, and study 100 % every day.

My philosophy on life is to be kind instead of right, and not to judge people by the way they look. Always treat people the way you want to be treated; what you give out is what you get back. If I had unlimited time and resources I would do nothing different than I would now, I would spend lots of time with my family and friends, doing things that we enjoy. I value my family, friends, and good health. I can best contribute to the world by being kind and hopefull

Although women are not present in the movie’s at anywhere near the amount of men, I feel that the women of the Lord Of The Rings play an unique and interesting role. Because there are so few women on the two movies, the audience is especially interested and watching when there is a women’s role-playing out. Not only was this an interesting technique to get the attention of the audience in the first two movies the set up is also The three little pigs grew so big that their mother said to them, You are too big to live here any longer. You must go and build houses for yourselves. But take care that the wolf does not catch you.

The three little pigs set off. We will take care that the wolf does not catch us, they said.

Soon they met a man who was carrying some straw. Please will you give me some straw? asked the first little pig. I want to build a house for myself. The other point that Peter Howell made in his article was that women have not they like fantasy. I shall build a stronger house than yours, said the second little pig.

I shall build a stronger house than yours, too, said the third little pig. From the survey it was found that 80% of the people that are Lord Of The Rings My dad would have been four or five and my aunt two or three. They would often play outside in their home where there was an old and I abandoned car.

Assimilation- the process whereby individuals or groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society.

Contact with Europeans, from bloody 1th-century “pacification by force” to the urban assimilation of the present day, radically altered Aboriginal culture.

In the mid-150’s, the general government policy emphasised an absorption process called assimilation. The word assimilation has been interpreted in various ways, but in practice it usually meant training Aborigines to enable them to take their place within the wider Australian system. It emphasised equality with other Australians, with the same range of choices, freedom of action, and responsibilities.

In practice, the assimilation policy meant rapid and radical change and the disappearance of most aspects of traditional life. To prevent this loss, the assimilation aim was officially modified in 165 to allow greater emphasis on traditional Aboriginal culture. For a time, this modified policy was called integration. But the trend today is toward self-determination and independence. This does not mean that Aborigines should cut themselves off from the mainstream of Australian society. Rather, it implies that Aborigines should have opportunities to make decisions for themselves, with a wider range of meaningful choices, and more encouragement to develop their heritage.

Aborigines today are Australian citizens. But most of them still face unofficial discrimination and prejudice and are underprivileged economically, socially, and politically.
