A Day to Remember

On a mucky summer morning in Ruston, Louisiana, I woke up to my alarm clock buzzing on the table. I was still tired from a late night the night before, but I managed to make it to the showers without tripping over any obstacle on the floor of my room. After I spent half an hour getting cleaned and ready to face the morning, I went to get some breakfast from the cafeteria. The cafeteria might sound unpleasant, but it was extremely delicious and had a buffet. The morning sun was starting to rise and dry the dew on the ground. I never thought the trip coming back from church camp would be such a memorable one.

After we prayed and were dismissed from the last service, all of the youth groups were packed up and ready to take on the long trip home except for one group. Yes, the group that was not packed yet was our youth group. We must have waited for at least thirty minutes for the girls to load their bags into the U-Haul and turn in their key to the dorm. I did not know some of the girls had slept in too late and did not have their bags packed. We finally set off on our journey one hour after our intended departure time. We were not on the road for two minutes and we had already pulled into a gas station. I think we must have wasted twenty minutes looking at snacks to buy for the ride before we finally started off again. We were beginning to make some time even though we did stop a few more times. When we stopped for a late lunch, our youth minister decided to ask a local for a short cut. The local man gave us a short cut straight through the great city of New Orleans whenever we were trying to by-pass New Orleans.

We decide to stop and take a look around since we were on the outskirts of New Orleans. I guess someone looked real close and happened to see that we had a flat tire on our van in New Orleans. We did not think anything else could go wrong, but we were wrong. A couple of the guys started to jack the van up and then rain started to come down on top of us. We did not park under an awning so some of us were extremely wet. We finally changed the tire and prayed for a safe return home even if we were a couple of hours late. Once we were back on the interstate, traffic was began to pile up. The roads were being worked on, and we eventually came to a halt and sat there for a few minutes.

After finally getting through all of the road construction, we were on our way home. We were going to take the by-pass so we would not go through the business district, but for some reason, we went straight on the path to go through the business district highway. Our youth minister decided to take the next exit off of the business district highway and our driver stopped halfway on the road and we were almost hit by oncoming traffic. Our driver started yelling at our youth minister, and then our youth minister turned the wrong way onto a bad street, and we had to turn around. Then, for some reason, he turned back onto the business district highway. Our driver practically screamed at us, the road, and our youth minister.

We finally returned to our church safely after being six hours later than our intended time. Overall, the trip took us about twelve hours to complete. However, we spent about nine of the twelve hours in in the state of Louisiana. Many people had learned lessons on this trip. One was to always be on time to leave. The second was to not get any directions from locals. The biggest lesson I learned was that even during the ride coming back from church camp, God can and usually will challenge someone to see how they can cope with obstacles.

In conclusion, I also have learned that there is always a lesson to be taught. No matter what is being done or said, everything happens for a reason. That was my first time visiting “The Big Easy” and was not what I would call exciting. Probably because we were almost always lost at some point, and we almost were involved in a wreck. The day we came back from church camp might be in the past, but that day will stick with me for the rest of my life.
