In this chapter a man and a woman are walking towards the large village of Weydon-Priors in Upper Wessex in silence. The woman, who is carrying a baby in her arms, occasionally whispers to her child who in turn murmurs something back. The bidding starts at one guinea and climbs to five but eventually a buyer is found. A sailor in the doorway had arrived a few minutes earlier and he agrees to buy Michael’s wife. As the money is sorted out Michael’s “wife” threatens to take the child with her if he dares touch the money. Michael coldly replies “I take the money the sailor takes you. That’s plain enough. It has been done elsewhere � and why not her?” As the woman and the child make their way to the doorway to leave with the sailor, Michael shows no remorse in his actions. When the woman reaches the door, she pulls off her wedding ring and flings it across the booth into Michael’s face. “Mike” she says, “I’ve lived with thee a couple of years, and had nothing but temper! Now I’m no more to ‘ee; I’ll try my luck elsewhere. ‘Twill be better for me and Elizabeth-Jane, both. So good-bye!” She leaves sobbing.
