Miss Brill may not go to the park anymore since by the end of the story, her fantasy world, which served as a fuel for her life, is shattered and she is forced to confront reality. The impact of the conversation between the young lovers is so detrimental on her heart, that by the end of the story “she [hears] something crying” (Mansfield, 61). The voices that she hears originate from her own heart and represent her inner destruction and failure to be a part of the youthful vigilant world. Miss.Brill voices the view of her society as she describes the elderly as “funny” “odd” and “invalid” creatures living in “dark little…cupboards” (Mansfield ,5). However, she is now shoved into the same criteria, which not only snatches away her role as an “actress” (Mansfield ,60). but also takes away her integrity and self-confidence which had allowed her to visit the park regularly. Furthermore, the fact that “she[passes] the baker’s by” (Mansfield ,61) in a hurry and does not even care to perform her usual routine of buying her honey cake foreshadows her discontinuation of her usual routines which brought her simple pleasures , one of which was going to the park on Sundays.

The image of Miss Brill and her attitude towards her fur is quite different at the beginning of the story from that at the end which suggests her loss of integrity. At the beginning of the story, the imagery of light and her careful observance of her fur in an admiring fashion suggests her positive and upholding attitude of herself. However, at the end of the story, the image of “the little darkroom like a cupboard” (Mansfield ,61) symbolizes and foreshadows her dim, dull and empty life that lies ahead of her. Similarly, the contrast of the first paragraph with dialogue and emotions with the last paragraph comprising of brief sentences reveals the tragic shattering of her world which empties her life. The quick pace at the end of the story suggested by the repetition of the word “quickly” suggests her running away from confronting her reality. However, her attempt to do so is in vain since her fantasy world has already been shattered, leaving her with nothing but an empty and meaningless existence.
